When’s the best time to jump ship after you start?

I’m a new hire at MS just started recently. just wondering when is the best time to jump to another company. Since i need to stay for 2 years to get all of my signon, 3.5 years to get all of my stock. 3.5 years seems too long for me. How long do people usually stay in a company before they switch? for TC/wlb or whatever reasons? Thanks!

stock is divided by 4.
I get 25% every time after 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 years

It doesn't have to be a grind, a little bit of prep here and there is a lot better - think spaced repetition vs cramming.

I left after 1.5, right after my second stock vest. They didn't ask for the remaining signing bonus left to be returned.

Dealer, lmfao for real. I said that somewhat in jest but you’d have a successful interview experience if you executed on that.

To be honest if you start a personal project and add features to it for 3 years, you'll have a solid product that people would be willing to pay for, better than getting a job

But is it legal to have a personal project while working for a company? I heard the company owns everything you write when you work for them

Usually nothing you do on your own personal computer during your own time. Read your contract and expectations though.

Depends on ur refresher stocks. If u have growth trajectory (both learning and financial) then why do u have to leave! , other than ur wlb is screwed !!!

Wow, planing the exit after you just joined? There is something really broken in the world nowadays

This is not only not broken, but should be encouraged. The average tenure for tech workers in Silicon Valley is 1.8 years, and you should be planning for your long term future.

Is a joke. But if you're having a terrible time, consider it.

3.5yr is shorter than virtually all 100% regular stock vests out there, (normally 4, outside of bonuses).

I'd say stay where you are unless you're ready to embark on a bigger and better master plan (startups, or run your own?)

Some opportunities only present themselves once. If you find something with a much higher TC and that you enjoy, just be egoist for once. What other people think of you does not matter, unless you have your own brand and are selling a product.
Out of curiosity, did you happen to have your RSUs not vesting in August/September to have such a vesting schedule?
