I have been a top performer at my job. My appraisal now for six years has been “Exceed Expectation”. I was expecting promotion this year. My director was moved to another role within the company last month and now I’m being pushed out.

Is it that Corporate America is just not fair or appraisal is overrated and useless? Or is it just that my company sucks?

    Most likely scenario is you were a favorite of your old boss and got a boost for that, but you are now being rated closer to reality.

      Serious question. What companies reward loyalty and tenure? All places I’ve worked would rather hire outside than try to groom internal candidates. Internal promos from SWE to Senior SWE are common, but I’ve rarely seen promos to EM (actual EM, not just Team Lead) or above. I’ve only seen directors hired externally. Just around 2 years seems to be the sweet spot in job hopping for promo or TC.

      I have never seen a IC becoming a senior manager or even manager at FAANG via external hires. Yes you can get IC level promos by hopping . But there’s a cap to that right..

      Maybe tenure helps IC’s move into the lower management ranks (EM to Senior EM)? I’ve never seen lower than Senior EM hired externally, just director and above. Cap for IC’s seems to be some level of Staff.

      I think base range for L5A-L5B (Senior 1 and 2) is $175k-$205k, with around 15k-20k RSU, and $20k-$40k performance bonus. Ranges are mostly fixed. I’m not 100% sure this is the range, but it’s close. TC at Uber is good. Career path is harder since Uber changes rapidly.
