Where do people tired of the Bay Area rat race move to?

Are Austin and Seattle the preferred destinations for techie transplants? What about east coast cities like Atlanta, Charolette or Raleigh?

Raleigh is a jewel. Not as many jobs as the bay but enough there. You will also get a manion for 500k and be in a well educated crowd of people.

    No rat race out there.

Did you join Cisco in Raleigh or transfer? I met someone who was allowed to take his SJ salary to Raleigh. If so that’s a great deal.

I'm in the bay. But I have worked in Raleigh in the past. Cisco adjusts salary based in location, unless you have great rapport with your management, who will do anything to retain you if you're good.

I thought this too until I realized for all that house and cheaper cost of living elsewhere my kids may not actually be better off. Here they are exposed to people from all over the world, have highly tolerant neighbors and schools (we have one child who is gay) and have a lot of freedom given the amazing weather. They are outside all the time. So what if I can’t afford all the extras? I think the above is actually more important.

Minneapolis is pretty nice if you can handle the cold weather. Otherwise, I've heard Austin, Denver, Portland, DC. Seattle is getting bad in terms of housing cost.

Some of us aren't ungrateful, suck it up, and stay. It's's not that bad and you can have a nice life in a smaller house/condo.

You are just looking for a shorter rat race or what's the outcome you are looking for?

Want to sell the house we have here, take the equity and savings and buy a larger home with a big backyard where our two toddlers can run around and have some what of a normal childhood. Ideally we would like to live mortgage-free (or with a very low mortgage) and spend more time at home with better work life balance and hopefully also send kids to private school or alternately get a home in a great school district so we don't have to go the private school route.

In the Bay Area it seems like you are constantly trying to maximize your TC just to have some of the normal things people in other parts of the country seem to take for granted.

@srs4 yeah I’d love that too. But the only way I see it working is with a bay area based company and then moving (perhaps remote role). Gets harder at more senior levels. Uber is everywhere but hoping that’s true for R&D in 2-3 years.

Come to Chicago! Excellent public schools all over burbs, private in the city....housing at less than half the cost of bay area and it's a huge city with all the amenities you could want. Great family values and culture too all adds up to a "normal" childhood. You have a spectrum of companies and cultures allowing you to pick consulting or startup with a rat race or something corporate or industry that's more 9-5.
