Where to stay- commuting Palo Alto and San Jose

My husband and I will be moving to Bay Area. He got a job in San Jose and I have a job in Palo Alto. We have 2 kids - 5 and 8 yrs. which is the best area to live to minimize the commute for both of us and at the same time there are good schools for kids. Would like to know from both renting and buying perspective. HH TC- $500k

Are your offices near to Caltrain?

Amazon Rntl OP Feb 10, 2019

Both of our offices are in downtown area.

Santa Clara?

Amazon Rntl OP Feb 10, 2019

Are schools good in the area. Can you suggest some good areas

AMD I/O Feb 10, 2019

No, bad schools in Santa Clara

Which part of San Jose? It's a big place.

Amazon Rntl OP Feb 10, 2019

Downtown

Nice, then you have Caltrain / bus / lightrail

Cupertino with good schools

Housing is super expensive to buy. Rent could be manageable

The middle would be Sunnyvale. Pretty good school district as well. If you guys live near downtown, then you can take caltrain to almost equidistant both directions.

Thanks, which schools are good in Sunnyvale for elementary and middle schools

Palo Alto

Amazon Rntl OP Feb 10, 2019

That might be far for my husband.

Quanergy Systems e6oc Feb 10, 2019

it'd be a reverse commute for him. otherwise los altos or mt view would be a little closer. the further south or east you go, the worse your commute

Oath FaFr18 Feb 10, 2019

Cupertino is a good option !

Amazon Rntl OP Feb 10, 2019

Yes, seems like it. Thanks

How much do you want to spend on rent/mortgage? SFH or condo? How many bedrooms do you need?

Amazon Rntl OP Feb 10, 2019

Rent = 2br, 4K and mortgage = 3br, 6k (20% down).

Cupertino is best as far as school goes and both kind of equi distant from there to commute. Other option is Mt View and schools are good I’ve heard although not as good as Cupertino but elementary level you just need a 8/10,9/10 school not necessarily 10/10.

Quanergy Systems e6oc Feb 10, 2019

mt view would be a bit more diverse if that matters

Sunnyvale south gets cupertino district (Stocklmeir) but as pointed out, not ideal for diversity.

It will actually be easier if you lived in PA. Going North in the morning and South in the Evening is horrible. But the reverse is a relatively easy commute (assuming you both will drive) This also allows one of you to be closer to your kids at all times in case they need anything. Additionally, PA has better schools.
