Which offer to take up?

Received few offers from Fb, Pinterest, Cruise and Uber for L5/E5 level.
I have narrowed down to Fb and Pinterest based on team match and overall compensation. However not able decide which one to finalize.

Fb - 410k
Pinterest - 500k

Base is same but Pins is more stock heavy with no annual cash bonus.

Pinterest is down 20% today after earnings and this seems like a good opportunity to join and grow with the company. Also team is very good match for my skill set.

Would it be a bad decision to reject Fb? Anything I am overlooking?

6yoe.

There is a reason pinterest is down 20 percent. Shit companies that don’t make much money wont last long dude. Take Facebook.

Instagram shoppified visual content well and already has a thriving community of influencers and brands who are invested in growing e-commerce on the platform. Pinterest is faced with massive competitive challenges in that regard. I also don't expect pinterest to deliver meaningful value from their r&d on image search tech unless some miracles take place with regard to search behavior.

What value do you see Pinterest producing in the next 5 years that warrant sustainable growth?

Twitter is still shit. Pinterest is going to be replaced by Instagram. That’s a matter of adding a single feature pretty much.

It's not about adding just a single feature but also about relevant content.

I mean if you want to take the twitter route with pinterest, get ready for massive layoffs as Twitter had multiple times already:

      https://techcrunch.com/2016/10/27/twitter-lays-off-9-of-its-workforce-as-it-posts-a-much-needed-positive-q3/

FB was already profitable at IPO, not even a remotely apt comparison.

If Facebook was profitable at ipo. Why did its stock go worse than pins before lock up? Just curious

Pinterest is going to be replaced by Instagram. That’s pretty much a matter of adding a single feature.

However, given how good you’re at getting offers, it doesn’t matter if you go to Pinterest and it tanks in 3 years. You can go anywhere.

That being said 22% more TC is worth it. Also, making 0.5M = legendary status.

Also, Pinterest can drop like another 35% before your Pinterest TC drops to Facebook levels. How awesome is that?

    Also, WLB.

I like your comment. BTW I don't believe replacing Pinterest is all about adding a single feature. It's not snapchat. Pinterest is more about content which is unique.

I've never heard of anyone at Pinterest hating their job, having issues with political pips, or killing themselves at work... I'd take Pinterest for 90k more per year since your not afraid of moving around in a year or two. Also don't forget FBs offer is good for a year, so I'd you don't like Pinterest after a few months do FB instead.

@^ what do you mean? Is Pinterest highly political or people hate their job?

@Gids and @OP - I don't work at FB or Pinterest, and I know FB is a bigger company. Blind is full of people complaining about FB, and there have been a few recent suicides there. I haven't heard a peep about Pinterest. Might be because they are better, or might just be because they are smaller.
      Nov 2
    • AT&T MsdR32
That doesn't have anything to do with an anonymous forum like blind. That article has merit, it's a sad state of affairs, but I don't see how it has any relation to Pinterest specifically. Seems like FB would have that issue as well.
      Nov 2
    • Pinterest Gids43
Lol, maybe you didn’t actually read the article bc it’s based on an anonymous survey conducted by Blind in 3/2019 of % of tech industry employees who faced retaliation their company.... look at who took the top spots.

One last thing - I’m going to again reiterate that the person with the offer BACKCHANNEL as much as possible before making a decision. Take all public news with a grain of salt because you’d be silly not to recognize that all companies have very diligent PR/legal teams to make sure that they control their image externally (and make sure that employment issues are discretely swept under the rug). Speak to people who actually work at the company too, even outside your team, but keep in much that your experience is ultimately determined by your team and specifically your manager - it could make a world of a difference. Also, transferring teams once you join is fairly difficult unless you’ve been with the company for some time, so keep that in mind too (so you’d likely have to jump ship elsewhere if you end up hating your experience after a few months or even a few years). Good luck!

Facebook is a horror movie. Some like it, others find forced. They are hiring a lot in near past with questionable hiring bar.

  • What was your Uber offer?
Why not take Uber, their stocks are very low, eventually over a period of time Uber stocks will come up then you’ll benefit, don’t make decisions based on the news about Uber.

Been here 2 years, came from FB and completely loving it.

FB will always be there, and you can always go back - and moving from LinkedIn to FB doesn’t make much sense as you still will be working in similar field instead of professional network you’ll work in social network.

Why would a company going down 20% make you more likely to buy that stock?

Unless you have legitimate reasons to think Pinterest is undervalued for the long term and will grow more?
    Oct 31 6
    • Tableau krxi15
Low stock price means you get more stock units for your joining grant.

Pinterest gives value based offer and the price used is last 60 day average.

@easzss thanks for the advice. We can never be sure until we try things out. Pinterest might go higher as well..one earnings can't decide the fate of the company. I might regret joining fb if Pinterest stocks go higher in future.

The only other thing to consider is pinterest people go to FB and get downleveled. 80k is neligible difference when you factor in growth potential and refreshers at FB. Pinterest is paying you more for volatility. You seem willing to take that risk so go for it.

Play the long game. Don't look at comp only. FB is a place where you will learn much more. After FB you can go anywhere and your market value will be much higher.
