Hi all, I'm migrating to Australia next year. Which tech companies should I strive to join? I'm a Software Engineer + Data Science/Analyst with 2 YOE. Also, what TC should I be negotiating for given particular tech company?
Google and Slack have Engineering roles, maybe not data science
Analysis of crikey and kangaroo may need you.
Hahaha! Right so!
Why Australia ?
Not sure how much luck you'll have finding data science roles at places like Google or Amazon. They have offices in Sydney/Melbourne, just fewer roles available. Amazon is hiring a Sr. Data Scientist in Perth (fantastic place to live) but doubt you have the experience. For data science.... Accenture seems to be on a hiring kick. Give mining companies a look (e.g. BHP, Woodside)... they're hiring a lot of data science/ML people. Banks would be another option (ANZ, Westpac....just google it, there's only like 6 banks here). Do you have a visa sorted? The government went through a crackdown on visas and it can be hard getting one. At least in the tech sector it's a lot easier to get sponsored. My employer sponsored my initial visa and paid for Permanent Residency (like a US green card) which was worth about $15K for me and the family. You won't get PR right away, but if you end up staying here it's worth getting and possibly seeing if your employer will pay for it. I'd look at where you want live: Sydney - Expensive as hell, but more job options. Melbourne - Better nightlife and food/restaurant scene, and still good opportunities Brisbane - Hot and humid, nice beaches, limited options Perth - I'm biased as In from Perth. Fantastic place to live (cheaper than eastern side). It's isolated as hell, but a lot mining companies here looking for data scientists and ML expertise. Limited options though. Adelaide - Fuck Adelaide Over in Perth the market seems to be in the 130-150K AUD range.
Thanks for this. What about Software Engineering roles? My DS specialization is more of applying my background in Statistics. But I'm more of a SWE.
There's SWE roles here, just very limited for FAANG type roles. A quick look shows only about 30 SWE type jobs at Google in Australia, and that's without filtering out senior/manager roles. Slim pickings. Lots of hybrid type jobs.... Software/Data Engineer jobs that involve writing Python and Java to support in house data scientists and ML. Your data science skills would be pretty marketable here. In general the pay is going to suck compared to the US, especially if you're in Sydney. That being said I really like the work life balance here (lots of vacation time, public health care....I got 6 months paternity leave when my son was born). Banks/FinTech are probably going to have more SWE roles, and be your highest TC places.
There's no point applying to only tech companies over there, they pay so little that there's no reason to work for them over any other company. On the other hand, that means you have other options, since you can apply for positions you normally wouldn't consider in the US due to lower TC. PwC etc., banks, other finance, telecom companies, Woolworths, and so forth. Basically anywhere they hire engineers.
Atlassian?
Hi thanks for this! How is the culture? And how much should be my TC?
idk man.
