Whiteboard interviews

Do you guys/gals use a real whiteboard to practice whiteboard interviews? How important is it to practice on a real whiteboard?

yes and very. writing code feels weird. Get used to it before the interview.

I feel the same. I am not very used to writing in whiteboards. So i just ordered one to practice on it

What size?

Too time consuming. I bought a whiteboard but just ended up using a notebook instead. Knowing the algos is more important than having good whiteboard handwriting

The “big secret” is that what you write on the whiteboard is secondary to what comes out of your mouth. Describe your thought process.

Comfortably doing design or coding on whiteboard is very important. In many tech companies, your interviewer may take a picture of the whiteboard at the end of the interview. You can practice on notebook so get used to expressing designs and algo/code that way. There are lot of cool tricks on how to use the space optimally - I do this (got this tip from Google recruiter) - have 4 sections (does not have to be equal). - write down the problem given to you. You can underline key parts etc. interviewer may correct it if you heard something wrong. You can use this section to write notes too. - design portion - boxes, flowcharts go here - code goes here - test cases go here.
