Who buys gas from Shell, Chevron, etc?

Jan 24, 2018 49 Comments

I buy my gas from Costco mostly, or Arco if I need gas and no Costco nearby.

I drive by Shell and Chevron and see the ridiculous price they charge for gas and I'm always amazed that they even have customers.

Yeah this is a tech forum and we could all afford to pay triple for gas and not change our lifestyles, but why overpay?

And many of those people lining up to over pay must not be rolling in tech comp.

What gives?

Some people value their free time and donโ€™t want to spend 15 mins to save $5 a tank. I look at Costco people and I see a lot of broke people and people who canโ€™t do basic math on the value of time.

    • I typically wait no more than 2min at Costco and I fill up on weekends. If it's a holiday weekend sure. Otherwise I don't find there are long lines. If there are, there's Arco.

Exactly. How can you even plan for just fueling your car? Save 5$ a month .. and compensate for a coffee you buy ? I'm sure a lot of people would hesitate to pay 3$ for an app on play store.

  • Because I pay for convenience. I'm not going to go out of my way to buy gas.

    • Arco gas has been recommended by Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, etc, for use in their cars. That's what "top tier" certification means.

Guess those auto engineers at Audi and BMW are clueless and don't know what's good for their cars.

Its a conspiracy. They want you to use shitty gas so that turnover rate is high

  • All gas stations in US have to pass a minimum quality test. Just because Arco is cheap does not mean it is shit. Whatโ€™s the guarantee that paying higher for gas at Chevron gets you better gas? I think Gas is a commodity. Always buy the cheapest one !

So instead of buying a $5 bottle of injector cleaner and adding it manuallu, you get it pre-mixed with your gas. To me that's worth a but of a premium price.
      Jan 24, 2018
    • You don't need the injector cleaner, Arco and Costco include similar detergents in their gas. You're spending extra for nothing.

Google research does not seem to confirm that.

    • Funny, Audi recommends Arco gas for its cars. I guess those car engineers at Audi are dummies.

(Arco gas is certified Top Tier, a designation developed by Audi and a few others to indicate which gasoline is recommended for their vehicles.)

Those who don't want to wait for 15 mins in line or those who need to fill gas after 9pm will avoid Costco. Arco is shit. If you drive an early 00's Corolla it might not make a difference. But for performance cars it makes sense to put Shell or Chevron. Also the 5-10 cents saved can be earned as reward points or cash back at other gas stations as Arco won't accept credit cards and charge fee for debit cards.

For "performance cars". Do enlighten us on how this fuel isn't good enough..
      Jan 24, 2018
    • It makes no difference for performance cars. That was true in the 1970s. Since then regulations have standardized gas and it makes no difference at all.

Youโ€™re so confident about that, but something tells me you donโ€™t actually know that for a fact. Youโ€™re making a lot of assumptions that just because there are โ€œregulationsโ€, things are in fact the same.
      Jan 24, 2018

Chevron adds techron, so you don't have to worry about adding the injector cleaning fluid yourself. That convenience is worth the premium price to me.
      Jan 24, 2018
    • Arco and Costco have similar detergents in their fuel. No differences there.

Generally the crappy brands buy old stale gas from the better brands. With Shell, BP, etc you're paying for fresher gas. Gasoline is not a particularly stable blend of hydrocarbons - there's a tendency for certain components to congeal or leave residues. Additionally, older gas doesn't burn as well and can lose it's anti-knock capabilities (remember your gas laws?as a gas is compressed, temperature increases - if this causes the gas to ignite before the spark plugs fires, you get a "knock" sound which robs performance and wears bearings, rods, etc).

Think about the lawnmower or pressure blaster that sat all year with gas in the tank. How hard is it to start (or does it start at all?) Does it run smoothly or is it coughing and sputtering?

That all said, you're probably fine burning the cheap stuff. My recommendation is to throw some fuel injector cleaner in at every oil change to help clean the varnishing on your valves and intake manifold.
Myself, I make enough money that I really couldn't give two shits about an extra 15-20 cents a gallon and I'd rather treat my engine with the cleanest fuel I can buy.

  • If you have to fill up at Costco pick the smart times. Early mornings or late evenings. Don't wait in the line like a lamb

I rarely have to wait in line. It's on my way to and from work. The savings is 50-60 cents per gallon. (Costco)

With Costco, I never bother with Arco.

I have kids and Costco makes sense for us.

I used to fill up at shell because it was conveniently located. But now I got a Costco membership and the gas savings alone pay for the membership and more.

I donโ€™t get Costco gas because I donโ€™t have a membership. I donโ€™t want to get a membership because, being single with my lifestyle shopping at Costco makes no sense. And the long lines at both Costco checkout and gas fill up lines.

The point is that by buying gas at Costco, you essentially pay for the membership annually, and if you fill up tuesday/wednesday evenings, there is no time wasted in Long queues..

    • Especially if you use their credit card and get another 4% back on their already low price, and I only rarely see long lines, even on weekends. If it's a long line and I can't wait I go to Arco. That happened maybe three times last year.
