Why Airbnb considered a top company, isn't it a website like Expedia, Kayak etc.

What products do they even have other than hotel booking?

They're similar to Expedia, Priceline etc.

  • Mostly because of their pay and benefits and a chance to make that $$$ during IPO. The tech is definitely meh. I bet booking.com gets more traffic than Airbnb

  • Yeah I have said that for a long time. They are a low traffic basic reservation webapp. Really don't get what are the tech challenges there. Another overhyped company.
People love it because it's part of the business startups that everyone overhype lately. Such is Uber and a couple others. Silicon valley was better when it was about real tech and not webapps.

      What’s webapps? Is google one?
      Mar 28
    • Google is partially one, but the main part of their tech is some complex model in the backend. Search or maps for example are resolving real problems in the backend.
Airbnb is literally like any other websites that existed 10 years ago.
In all seriousness can you tell me what's different between Airbnb website and American Airlines website? I bet AA gets more traffic and reservation, but you would never say that AA is a cool SV tech company, isn't ?

Just because a product / service isn’t technically interesting or challenging doesn’t mean it isn’t a good product / service.

You sound like a typical engineer who had 0 product thinking skills.

Airbnb has a strong focus on overall travel experience, from giving people an opportunity to stay in places hotels often aren’t, to connecting them with a range of experiences. Airbnb thinks big, most other sites just aggregate data and provide a way to book tickets. I do find Airbnb’s vision a little silly at times but I prefer it to none at all.

Looks like it’s working out for them nicely! I understand that you’re offended by their PR, but that shit works.
      Mar 29
    • Does it ? Who does it fool to think their website is more than a booking website with nice UX?
      Mar 29
    • Oracle / Design MiddleWest
I don’t think it fools anyone, I think it provides a lot of value to hosts and guests. I don’t find the UX that nice by the way; it’s often clunky, confusing, and it’s annoying that it opens stuff in new tabs all the time.

Ha. They’re hardly masterpieces, but for the use-cases...they work. You’re an ostensibly design-led company, so you’re gonna get heat for it now and then. I’m also guessing what you have works well enough for most people.

Odd to see all the negativity, but hey it is blind after all.

Airbnb completely disrupted the hotel industry and changed the travel experience for the better. Their product is great and seemingly everyone I know uses it all the time.

They are also known to pay top of market and have great perks.

Airbnb is realizing their room/home rental business model doesn’t sustain. Hence, they’ve been selling “experiences” or activities, acquired HotelTonight, and will be selling flights to get into the full OTA industry. They’ve been doing well for a while, but see where this is going?

Hahah are you drinking some management provided koolaid that in your mind Expedia is better than Airbnb ? Airbnb pays better , has amazing culture , has better reputation, Solid yoy growth .
PS: Airbnb is not struggling . You might be thinking about a company called Expedia 😂😂
      Mar 30
    • Expedia boe
lmao sounds like you’re the one actually drinking the koolaid... your options aren’t worth shit so your TC is shit. your company is shit too we don’t even consider you a competitor. we more than triple your traffic, revenue and profit 🤷‍♂️

Stfu both of you. I’ve worked at both companies Airbnb is miles above and better than Expedia in culture, pay, perks, growth, and product thinking. No contest. Expedia has ancient tech stack, all white dudes in power, no diversification, and they had to buy their competitors because they couldn’t beat them.

Define top. Apple, samsung, LG all make a lot of products, not just handsets, and shit ton of money.

    • Netflix bOXF46
Their culture is complete BS though. It's a company disguising a boring traditional business into "kumbaya we're a community" nonsense that appeals to 20-something SF hipster engineers. If all you can sell people on are perks... Then you probably don't have any interesting problem to solve. Their lawyers have harder problems to solve than their engineers.
      Mar 28
    • This. Their culture is all pure koolaid and cult thinking. They have two (two!!) One hour behavioral culture interview as part of their process to make sure you are part of the cult.
At the end of the day , they are a simple boring webapp that is wayyyyy too overhyped

Expedia and Priceline just aggregate data for others?
    Mar 28 8
    • Facebook public2
They own the listing and transaction, they are a middleman between buyer and seller not a middleman between buyer and seller's seller.
      Mar 29
    • Expedia boe
Wrong. buyer = you, seller = Marriott, expedia = middleman. Expedia owns the listing and transaction.
      Mar 29
    • Facebook public2
Incorrect. You asked why the difference, I provided the answer, and you refuse to believe it. Make sure to tell the market :)
      Mar 29
    • Expedia boe
Wrong answer. Study alittle more and come back.
      Mar 29
    • Facebook public2
What should the market study? Why is the general population and investors wrong and you are right? Why so sour, Expedia is a cool business and the world needs middle middle platforms and aggregators.

Expect more people to use it as the platform for it matures. It’s a great way to foster more resonant, non-tourist experiences.

And again, I’ll note that I find soooooo much of Airbnb’s messaging smug and even inauthentic at times, but it doesn’t matter because millions of people love it and use it and get a lot out of it.

@Apple that applies for all top tier companies . Uber, apple , Facebook , amazon etc. fundamentally companies which are disruptive, are tech based , pays top dollars , cares about customers, employees and investors , provides a value to its customers, is profitable, has solid growth ; are considered top company . If that definition does not makes sense to you, would you mind clarifying what top company means to you ?

I think it’s because of following same mediation model as uber/lyft. Ride hailing companies are a hit and so any company that followed same business model got the hype. Plus the hot stock market

Their tech is not great. Their engineering blog boring for backend ... but it’s just cool to go there because it’s pre-ipo and all.
