Ok, so I’ve been using ad blocker for the last few years and haven’t noticed how many video ads are showing up now. Looks like they are putting ads before each video and some of them are 30 secs long and you cannot skip them (like wtf?). For longer videos they put multiple ads interrupting the video. How greedy can you get? It’s not like Google is struggling to generate revenue? Why do they do that? Obviously the don’t have strong competition here, but it seems like it’s hurting the end user. After watching just 2 videos I feel exhausted and want to exit YouTube. Needless to say, I’m reinstalling my ad blocker. Thoughts?
I thought the number of ads is decided by content author
you could get YouTube Red. It’s a small subscription fee and it prevents ads and has some cool benefits. I pay for it and Google doesn’t even let me get it for free.
YouTube premium. I pay for family membership. It is really not that expensive. No ads on YouTube. Everyone loves this. I love that kids don't watch ads. YouTube app keeps on playing when phone screen is locked. My wife loves this. She listens to talk shows on YouTube while doing stuff around the house. Includes Google play music - pretty much any music I want and more. Some meh original content. Cobra Kai was ok-ish, did not find anything else interesting.
The uploader decides how many ads to put on and what kinda ads to put on a video. You can only put ad breaks if the video is over 10 mins. Dont blame YouTube for this. In fact they only want quality youtubers now. They have so many restrictions/requirements for monotizing content.
When Google started, one thing they did to differentiate themselves was to have a nice clean page, results which were not overburdened with ads, and they clearly designated ads from results. Over the years, Google has forgot this humble idea. Results have tons of ads, they are confusingly masquerading as results, and they are more intrusive and in your face. Now it's YouTube's turn. Sigh. Some upstart is going to use Google's playbook against them.
$3/mo VPN solves ad problem
How can I get VPN for 3$/mo?
Nordvpn for example, but they charge for couple years
When did sprint get so greedy and start charging subscribers to use their cell network? How greedy can you get? It’s not like sprint doesn’t have billions of dollars in backing from SoftBank? Why do they do that? Obviously there isn’t strong competition in the telecom space since they’re quasi monopolies but it seems like it’s hurting the end user for billing for everything, including those mysterious service charges. Thoughts?
Ha! Not the same thing lol... Sprint is barely profitable, getting cash positive for the first time in 11 years. My question is not about whether YouTube should or shouldn’t run ads, but rather asking why go so ballistic on quantity of ads? Imagine seeing a video ad every time you login to gmail, that would be annoying right? Thank goodness they haven’t done that just yet...
It’s a bit tongue in cheek ;).
Just get a YouTube Red. It’s not that much subscription fee. You can split with friends or family.
What are you going to do about it, use Vimeo? You have no place to call them out for being greedy, they’re no different than any other large company with a money printer under its wing
That’s what I acknowledge that they don’t have competition and can get a way with it. But my point is why do they have to do it? They make good revenue as it is and it seems like the more ads you put the worse user experience is.
Because shareholders demand increased profits.
