Psychologist Susan Pinker on the role of choice in gender differences in the workplace. http://m.nautil.us/issue/58/self/why-women-choose-differently-at-work
Simply put, we need to force girls to study CS. It's the only way we get to 50/50.
To suggest otherwise could get you fired from Google.
In many non-western cultures, girls seem to have (close to) equal representation in STEM fields, so the difference is more assuredly not biological.
You may be correct, but realize that it could still be biological. I.e. girls in non Western cultures might be being forced (i.e. nurtured) into entering fields that they may not have chosen if left to their own devices. Or maybe Western girls are coerced into going into non stem fields. Leave your mind open to both possibilities.
@msft did you even read the article? the author has an explanation for exactly this...
It's a good way to inspire people. This is how rewards n recognition been working in this world from long time to inspire people to think and let excel in a direction.
I wish people would stop lumping all men together and all women together.
*nods* We really should stop even asking about sex distributions in the workforce. Just leave people be.
I wish people stop generalizations like "women are A", "men are B". Every time you generalize, you disregard individual features, and those count more on any decision.
“[Women] want to do a job that’s meaningful, that provides social contact, and that is flexible. Most tech jobs do not satisfy those criteria.” Is this accurate?
That sounds like a non tech person's stereotype of a tech job - assuming it is antisocial, only building frivolous apps, and has terrible wlb. And not understanding that tech is more "flexible" in hours than many other types of jobs.
Agreed, it’s more like the opposite.
Wow - this is going to be incredibly controversial.
Why the hell is this tagged as #metoo? It’s a great article that has absolutely nothing to do with it. An interesting (and probably inaccurate) take away I had from this is that if tech companies had more women in it with roles that complimented some of the attributes they excel at better than men, we would all get paid less. Making a couple of generalizations here but most tech companies are dominated by men and most of the high paying ones treat their engineers like children, or at least less mature people than in other industries. And let’s face it, we are. That’s one of the reasons why we get paid so well. The people that have are more well rounded and good at the tech tend to excel in our industry and lead others. They’re the ones at the top end of the pay spectrum. Now if we had people in roles that helped the team cohesion (something the article says women can exceed at) who didn’t also need to be technically exceptional, it could mature the team as a whole. This would make it so that it would totally change the bar of developers as now they only need to excel with the tech side of things and there would be a lot more candidates to fill the role. A lot more candidates means a lot less money to pay individuals. This of course is just my take away from the article and backed by absolutely 0 evidence.
I wish people stop generalizations like "women are A", "men are B". Every time you generalize, you disregard individual features, and those count more to any hiring decision.
Are you complaining about the article posted by the OP or is this a general comment? It’s wrong to generalize people. This is what identity politics does. But that is not what the article is doing.
