Not born here. I find that Americans have an unhealthy obsession over race and gender, and in particular using that to identify who they are. It's really pathetic. Examples. Why do girls have such inferiority complex? Back in my birth country, I always got beaten by girls in STEM in school. I was rank #3. #1 and #2 were girls. Then I moved here, and suddenly the narrative is that girls can't do STEM that's why we need to have all these extra programs to help them. Eh... Wtf? Why do people give a fuck about their race and where they were born? I find it so fucking irritating every conversation eventually leads where are you from? Where I am from has zero fucking correlation to where I am now. Especially irritating is those people who keep on digging and asking for your race. Like why the fuck is it relevant? Americans are so weird. Why keep obsessing over things you can't change? Personally I don't ask a person where they are from. I judge them based on where they are now. What field of work? What's your carreer progression? Are you part of FAANG? And of course what's your TC? $260k TC, 7 yoe.
Because women and minorities in the US have been historically discriminated. They weren't even allowed to go to school or even vote. So we need to give them extra boost and care in order to achieve equality. Don't be like a jerk and learn more about US history and you will understand why all these affirmative actions and measures are absolutely necessary.
i guess in opâs birth country, women and minorities have been discriminated and not allowed to go to school either, but that does not stop girls in opâs country from being ranked as #1 or #2 in stem. IMO what OP want to say is the way we achieve equality (affirmative actions) in the states is ineffective.
You are saying this as if other countries had females empowered since the birth of their countries? Every country on earth faced female discrimination , and only country that is still screaming for equality is sadly US where women are probably most empowered on earth. Studying US history doesnt help me understand the current status of gender and race equality though. It just looks like we are going in an opposite direction
Because slavery. Learn the history of the country you live in.
Every region on Earth had slavery. Some have it even today. Learn the history of the world that you live in.
Slavery existed everywhere in the world. I cant believe how narrow minded Americans are lol, I guess they focused too much on US history, and not on international history
First off, stop judging people, especially based on where they work. Maybe people ask you where you're from because they're genuinely interested and want to hear a story different than their own. There's a whole lot of people with biases who intentionally or unintentionally tell women they can't do maths and science. We try to counterbalance by providing opportunities.
I understand that "where are you from?" might be an innocent question, but it could be loaded. I do see white people asking each other "where are you from", but when a white person asks a non-white person this question, it could sound like "you look different. There's no way in hell you could be from here."
Because it gives them internet points to virtue signal about it.

Read more about the history of the country you reside in, and youâll learn how that has shaped the present.
As you can tell by the replies, many people in the US have been conditioned (by our universities) to classify everyone by race and gender. Then they use their internal bigotries to rank your worth based on the answers. For the most part, they are race-obsessed and biased, and get triggered if their world view is questioned. Our race is human, it's the only correct answer to that question.
You can see the most uncultured responding with "read more about America"... kind of alarming the lack of self awareness really for those folks.
Thereâs nothing wrong with that answer. âUnculturedâ is moving to another country and not wanting to learn about that country.
Im using uncultured as in you understand little about the history and circumstance of cultures and geography other than your own. If you were more educated you would see why that answer is ridiculous.
What country are you from that women dominate the top positions in STEM? More women enroll in college than men but that doesn't mean women are topping academic fields.
It makes good politics. Convince them they are victims and their only hope is to vote for X. Repeat this for long enough and people believe it.
