This is simply the result of less women than men going into stem fields. Fix the root problem of girls getting into stem, the result will change.

It's simple math. If more men in total go into a career field, there will consequently be more qualified men than women to hold higher positions in that field.

tGtt04 why so angry at the truth? You don't think more girls need to get into stem fields?

When i was getting my cs degree in school, there were 2-3 girls that i knew of in the program. Class with a size of 80+ students, not a single one female. It's not because girls couldn't be a cs major in school.

How do you expect there to be tons of qualified female SDMs/leaders, when there is such a discrepancy in the number of males vs. females graduating with the necessary degrees?

Many of the top leaders in tech have MBAs and non STEM degrees. See Andy Jassy, Brian Chesky, John Zimmer, and many others. So the STEM degree requirement is a total double standard.

Only if you look at top level executives of a company. Comparatively to the number of total employees, it's a tiny fraction. But top level executives of a tech company have nothing to do with tech unless they're the CTO. The true disparity in tech companies is not top level exec's, it's the mid level managers and ICs.

But even with your argument about MBAs, have you ever seen the population of a typical MBA graduating class? Predominantly male, again. I have never personally known of a single girl to get an MBA or have any desire to. Have you?

40-45% of the TOP MBA programs are female (Harvard, Wharton, Stanford, Yale, Tuck, Northwestern) — the top 2 Econ majors in my class at a top tier college were female as well. I’d be more than happy if 40-50% of CEOs in tech were female...because women are just as qualified for those top roles, we agree on that, yes?

Yeah, if the most qualified person for the job is a woman, she should definitely get the job. If the top qualified peeps are women, get them in there.

I don't think you should suffer quality for the sake of diversity hiring just to meet some diversity quota though. Hire the most qualified candidate, period. No biases, no assumptions, just the facts. I don't care who i work for, with, etc as long as they're qualified for the job

Ok, so back to OP’s original question—if women make up 40-50% of top MBA programs, why aren’t these highly-qualified candidates being promoted to CEO/COO/CPO roles in tech companies?

Obviously no MBA grad straight out of school is going to get hired as an exec. It'll take however many years to make their way up the ranks. So i think the real question to ask is, what happens to these women in between the time they graduate and their male graduating classmates become CEOs and whatever else. At what point do their paths diverge and where do the women end up at? I think this info would be the most telling of anything.

But again when people talk about lack of women in tech, executive level is such a small fraction of the total number of jobs. What would be better to see, a single woman on top with a bunch of men working below her, or single man on top with equal amount of men and women working below him?

I hope you read your own article

“These early personal computers weren't much more than toys. You could play pong or simple shooting games, maybe do some word processing. And these toys were marketed almost entirely to men and boys.

This idea that computers are for boys became a narrative. It became the story we told ourselves about the computing revolution. It helped define who geeks were, and it created techie culture.”

The article you linked has nothing to do with the original argument

^ right. Moreover, in the 80s software was seen more as a secretarial work and "real men" built novel computers and worked in hardware. This was the reason for it's adoption by women. Societal norms and interest-differences were still at play. Don't learn leftist propaganda @Grubhub.

Are you folks from a society that hates seeing women succeed? Men went to war and they thought that writing software were easy so they hired women to do the work though they couldn’t figure out how the first computers and languages worked. :)

“Hiring mangers began administering aptitude and personality profile tests that were biased toward men. The answers were circulated to fraternities and men’s clubs like the Elks.
One of they key takeaways of the personality tests was the best programmers were antisocial, and that that was a male trait.” Citation needed

      Read carefully
      https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/computer-programming-used-to-be-womens-work-718061/

"Now, it’s not that managers of yore respected women more than they do now. They simply saw computer programming as an easy job. It was like typing or filing to them and the development of software was less important than the development of hardware. So women wrote software, programmed and even told their male colleagues how to make the hardware better."

In other words, secretarial work. And a supportive role to the computer hardware folks. Remember, even this has been sugarcoated through the lens of leftists and feminists. You have to read the magazines of the past to decipher the real truth.

Yes but the people she represents are uncivil, rude and ideologically possessed - anyone not agreeing with her toxic philosophy is "closed minded" as she wrote above; pointing out the truth and pursuing the truth is analogous to "you hate seeing women succeed" WTF?!?; these people need to be spoken back to in an equal manner. Why do you hate men @grubhub? 🤔

You also mentioned the bias that are created in place to favor men. See what you’ve quoted.

Keep it civil. Thanks for mentioning that. Some of the folks actions here are doing exactly what the article is pointing out: men making them unwelcome and even here. Nobody says anything about hating men. I would love to not work with you ever, whoever this google mgr person is.

I’m sure there’s some unintentional discrimination happening at the promotion level, but I think the main problem is the majority of computer science graduates are men. As women continue to enroll in cs degrees I think things will even out.

At least for entry level positions where I work you could argue we discriminate against men by interviewing only women in an attempt to even out the male to female ratio.

There are two independent studies. One that shows that brains are smaller and another one that shows that lower brain volume is correlated with lower cognitive ability. Academics are afraid to connect the dots though, and these two studies are never cited together.

Because after a while of fighting the system, most get tired of the bullshit. if There's only so many times most people will put up with the small things that add up. I stuck it out, 20+ yeo sales engineer+ other highly technical positions save SWE. Nothing like a customer outright calling me stupid once when I miss the perfect answer to their trivia contest, but I just grin and bear it if we get the PO (purchase order)., women have a choice, due to lack of cultural expectation. Men don't. There are some women that tolerate the bullshit, because we don't like being dependent on a guy.

A guy (customer) called me incompetent. I know my skills. I don't give a shit if a man or woman assesses my skills & it differs from mine. I'm a woman. If I was insecure and sought validation from others, I would have bounced long ago. But I want financial Independence. I put up with more stuff than most women can tolerate. Women are the best at holding other women down. Ask me how I know 😉
Most of the peers I respect are men. Just few women have earned my respect. I don't spend too much time with younger women. They need to prove themselves worthy of my time investment. I'm there for them- but they need to find why they are pushing themselves. I put in countless late nights. It's not easy on anyone. Young women need to understand that you can have the opportunity. They still need to do the hard work without getting prodded along the way to make the most of the opportunity. You either dig deep; or move out of the way.
      Dec 18, 2018
    • GrubHub / Eng 🌈:]
Indeed. You’re holding other women down as you’re doing. I liked what I heard at some point from someone that instead of fighting for that small piece of pie, carving out more pieces instead is more positive. This applies to not only gender but all races and backgrounds who are trying to make it in a field that is either dominated by men or some ethnic groups.

I try to be very supportive of anyone. Just do the work. I help people that help themselves. My existence shows other women behind me that there is a path. And if I'll lucky, they will go father than I. Everyone deserves a chance to kick butt. But I can't give someone self esteem to get through it. They need to figure that out themselves.
