Why cant we pay a flat fee for government services?

Jan 24 26 Comments

Religion, banks, government seems to be the ones charging percentage of your income/net assets.

Everyone else has a flat price. Your car mechanic doesnt charge 5% based on car value or your income do they?

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.”

Except... a drug addict that gives their drugs away to business steadily for 40 years?

Because in any society there are always people who are not doing well enough to avail all services that you do. If there was a flat fee what is affordable for you might not be affordable for another person whose income level is much lower. That is why we need to have a government and for that people have to pay taxes.

    • Then make THAT portion of taxes and welfare clear to all, so that those who are receiving dont end up as entitled brats expecting gov to do everything for them.

Im not disagreeing but government tries to cover up that aspect of redistribution.....

$20k / year in taxes for general gov services and anything after that should be considered "charity donation" with your family name not government officer....like airports namrd after some senator

^ well said. Progressive taxation is basically looting of your money by mafia-in-chief: the government. It's lethargic, bureaucratic, slow and wasteful and doesn't even make good use of that money. It's a disgrace. Imagine a mafia leader making yearly visits to your home to rob your money and then you watch him burn that money in his fireplace the next day. That's how inefficient the government is.

Flip the argument. Would you be ok with everyone in your job role across all companies earning a fixed income? The sad truth is we like inequality if it favors us

    • Everyone is earning a fixed income for a job role....salary bands.

You are not getting paid % of googles revenue are you? You are fixed cost...and generally within the band in the region and job role.

Except someone in the Midwest at a manufacturer is making a fraction for same role?

Because you derive way more value from the government and society than someone making less.

And no one has a flat price. The Acura dealership charges more than the Honda one even though both types of cars are essentially the same.

How so? Government takes more than it provides to most high earners.

Do you? Do you drive on more roads? Do you use more police and fire services?

Lol yes police do protect high earners more than low as most police funding is local.

And you benefit from the overall functioning society. Someone taking $y has $y to lose from a collapse. If you make 10y, you have 10 times as much to lose and thus derive ten times as much value from society

Lol what? You mean high earners fund police more than low earners, since they’re funded by local income, property, and sales taxes.

People worth more have more freedom to transfer their assets and leave. It’s the people who depend on their govt for subsistence who are screwed. The rich are doing fine in Venezuela by comparison.

High earners pay in way more and get way less back.

You get to keep your ability to be a high earner by having the society continue to exist.

You think SDE salaries are gonna be this high if we took away all disposable income from 60 pct of the population?

Police don’t protect high earners more. I’ve been paying taxes for decades, called 911 for the first time and the cops refused to show up.

It feels awful to see big chunks of my salary going to taxes that my government uses to pay $10 million to a terrorist....
I’m an immigrant but I came here to work. Lots of people come here, work for cash, and they make just as much as I do just from help programs from the government.

Top 50% of income earners pay 97.5% of the taxes. The bottom 50% of income earners pay the remaining 2.5% of taxes.

The U.S. has one of the most progressive tax systems in the world. People pay attention to marginal tax rates when they should look at effective tax rates.
