Why do immigrants (chinese, indians, etc) not appreciate diversity?

I see that a lot of indians want to date indians, same with chinese, they marry and go live in a suburb that is little china or little india.
This has traditionally been a seggregation tactic from colonisation that blacks lived in one part, whites in one part, but why are Asians doing it to themselve? They are self-segregating.
These people usually hang out from the same people of their culture and date within it too. Why even leave your country if you just want to cling? And the lack of diversity in their own experience and their children’s experience isnt good for this country either.

  • It's not about segregating, it's about striking a connection.

As an Indian, I strike a better connection with an Indian (exceptions are always there) because we have common things to talk about and we understand where a particular thought process is coming from.

Example - if I tell a white guy, my parents will be visiting me and staying with me for 3 months, he might find it weird. But an Indian will not. Indeed, he might be very supportive.

Context matters. It's different coming from someone who's trying to exclude already oppressed groups. Anyway, what I mean is holding on to positive aspects of your culture. I don't mean import the caste system, colorism, classism and other problems with Indian society for example.

@Oath/other: you just proved your own point. You find it weird for adults to live w parents bc that’s the culture you grew up with. I’m second gen Asian and I don’t find it weird. But maybe my kids when they grow up will. Assimilation takes time. Ppl have preferences. That’s the bottom line response to OP. We prefer our own food bc we grew up w it but I also prefer american food. A lot of FOBS from China don’t like Mexican food but my family loves it. Most second gen Asians do. #itiswhatitis

Children are the one to truly assimilate. I don't think you can ever expect foreigners to 100% assimilate.
      Aug 11, 2018
    • @Docker Yes, I do that. Things I did for the first time in US because they aren't common in India or I never got the opportunity:
      - Surfing and water sports
      - wine tasting
      - Gay parade,...

Things that I do only with Indian friends, and they are absolutely normal:
      - cooking together
      - crashing in at each other's place
      - saying mean things to each other for fun,...

Assimilation is different from preference. I prefer an Indian community doesn't mean I look down on others. It just means I am more comfortable with my kind of people.

You seem to confuse diversity Vs preferences. Most asians I know like to live in diversified neighborhoods, but prefer asian food.

Look, there are lots of white Americans and Europeans in my hometown Shanghai and a lot of them never spend effort to learn the language or assimilate into Chinese society as well. All they did was complain about food, politics and culture.

Agreed and they will be first to complain about discrimination also...I heard India has caste based class society and they promote similar kinda segregation here also.

Bullshit. U guys with your pre-conceived notions. Caste based society in India is dying, in cities no one cares, in rural India it's dying as literacy is increasing. I havent and no one I have known in the past 10 years have promoted segregation or even talked about it here.

I mean, there are American ex-pat communities in a lot of countries, even in ones where English is a recognized language. Why? Because sometimes it's nice to get together with people who share your background or have shared cultural references and shoot the shit.

Why leave your country then if you only want to live with Indians,? I am an Indian and have made American friends who I can connect more than my Indian friends here. Honestly unless you try to assimilate or hang out with others you don’t know if you will get along well or not . I wonder if people come to America just for dollars 💵 😆

What’s wrong with coming for money? Did you come to US because you don’t want to live with a bunch of brown people in India? What’s wrong with choosing to hangout with people who love the same food and share the same culture after work even though I have no problem hang out with white colleagues? Dunno why are many immigrants so judgmental.
      Aug 11, 2018

If you are in Rome be like romans . It just shows you don’t want to get out of your comfort zone then what’s wrong if whites complain that there are lots of Indians in their communities and they would have preferred whites over brown as neighbors. If you as an Indian saying this on one side then you should not companion of anti immigrant policies because at the end it’s same .
      Aug 11, 2018
    • Microsoft oh my ohoh
First, I am not an Indian. Second, America is huge and there are many ethnicity of American, why do you think only hang out with white Americans are the way to be like “romans”? Why can’t I hang out with Indian American? This only tells me that you are the kind of Asians that think only hang out with white people proves you are in US.
      Aug 11, 2018
    • VMware Uyhgs
I’m not saying you hang out with only whites or only Chinese or only Indian or only African American but I find this mindset disturbing when you say you are choosing people with same color , same eating habits ,same culture to hang out with in conscious mind. If you choose this then no country can be better than a home country . You can’t just come to take this country to make money and live in small community of yours .

Well, which country can pay me 200k plus and less working hours :) just like people looking for partners who share the same hobby, why can’t I choose to hang out with people who can go eat with me at my favorite Asian restaurant and not feeling disgusting about some of my favorite dishes? This just logically doesn’t make sense to me. Everyone can decide where they want to stay and who to hang out with.

Hasn't this ALWAYS been the pattern of immigrant communities in the US? 100 years ago the Italians had their neighborhoods, the Swedes moved the the upper Midwest, the Poles moved to Chicago and Milwaukee, etc. I don't quite understand why you're singling out Chinese or Indians.

Have YOU moved to a strange and foreign country before? I imagine if you did, you might look for communities that somewhat resembled your home country.

Is dating same as assimilation? How about living by the same American principles and living as law-abiding citizens? Isn't that a kind of assimilation?

I have also found that interesting. I am not asian, but I am foreign and when I choose where to live I never really care about whether people from my country or geographical region live there. However I see people from China and India making a really big deal about living near people of their same country.
Maybe it's because I come from a big city and don't really talk too much to my neighbors anyway. Do people in big Chinese and Indian cities interact with their neighbors a lot?

Chinese Americans are a distinct ethnic group from mainland Chinese. They hang out together because they have shared values and experiences. Saying they don't appreciate diversity is a gigantic leap.

It’s one thing to be forced to live in a ghetto by the majority, quite another to chose to live with people one identifies with. Don’t conflate the two as though they are equivalent.

Maybe the insecurity as a minority in a new country drives them to live together.
    Aug 11, 2018 4
    • Microsoft mstomania
No, minorities on H1B never feel any insecurity as our income is much higher than the median income of Americans. We speak English everyday at work, so give us a break and let us speak native language after work so we don't forget how to speak our native language and do stuff in our native way. We do hangout with American friends and have fun activities. Why we hanging out with people from our country and speaking our own language is anti-diversity? Why no one complains when white and African Americans live in all-white and all-black neighborhoods and only speak English? That's way less diverse.
