Is it for aesthetics and thinking your car looks cooler? I understand that’s it’s better for large trucks so that their trunks don’t stick out, but for sedans? Come on. I don’t mind cars that are already parked, but it’s super annoying when I’m driving behind someone in a parking lot and they suddenly brake and start reversing quickly. The less skilled drivers sometimes force me to back up as well, and then they waste time by pulling forward and backing up repeatedly until they fit perfectly into the spot. Why?
Yeah, it's definitely a douchey move for sure. I'm guessing the argument is that they like being able to pull out facing forward, which is a bit silly because you still don't avoid having to drive in reverse. I also see it lead to crooked parking jobs as well. It seems like a poor attempt to peacock alpha male status.
The less skilled drivers makes it hard but in a more skilled situation for the driver it's easier to back up into a spot as opposed to back out of one into traffic or lanes I guess
I read somewhere that the risk of an accident is smaller overall.
Backing in allows your car to turn on a tighter radius. Not always necessary, but I suppose it’s good to practice so you have the skill when you need it.
^ correct answer, it was a necessary exercise in my driving school. Plus safer to leave.
I drive a sports car and back in. The front end is super low to the ground and has minimal clearance. Backing in allows me to get snug with the curb without risk of damaging or scratching my front end by pulling in too far.
That actually makes sense, I didn’t think about that.
It’s considerably easier to get your car into a small parking spot by backing in.
I used to work for a lube additive plant in Texas where they used to require us to back in to our spots. Their rationale was that it was safer because most accidents happened when people were getting ready to go home and not paying as much attention. 🤷🏻♂️ I often take the ACE train and hate when people do this and cause delays in parking when the train is about to arrive.
Safer in many ways. No blind reversing. Easier to access doors when leaving.
I prefer to back in too since it is easier to pull forward and leaves less room for accidents while leaving. I am always afraid of reversing in a parking lot specially when kids are around. You have to be patient with amateur drivers. They will get skilled at it only through practicing more.
