Why do some people choose Microsoft over Amazon even when Amazon pays more bucks

Title
Of course money isn't everything, so what are the other things which weigh in favor of Microsoft?
Also I have an offer from Microsoft , should I interview with Amazon? Of course this might depend from person to person but should I do it in your view?

Layoffs are for non eng mostly. Quit uttering bs. Everybody know likelihood of PIP is an order of magnitude more likely than layoffs

I hear about layoffs in MS relatively often. I have friends among engineers who were laid off from MS. They are pretty good engineers.

How tasteless. People just love to complain, always talk about corporate jobs as slavery. Amazon pays well over $100k, and has for a long time. Sometimes you get free food too. I work no more than 40 hours per week, with rare exception. We're not doing 12-15 hours a day of back-breaking work on under 1000 calories of rotten food. We don't get woken up at 4 or 5 am every day, but we do complain when there's a 9 am meeting on the calendar.

I would probably not enjoy working at Microsoft. Sounds boring. Some people like to rest and vest though. Even some Amazon people do the same thing but somehow never get managed out. Getting PIPed must not be fun, but it's also not fun to work with people that take 3-4 sprints to do 1 week worth of work.

Try working at MS first. I don’t think it is as bad as it is perceived here. There are a lot of smart guys over there. Everybody I talked to from MS were good engineers.

Worked at both. Amazon and msft pay are similar not a major deal. Sometimes msft pays more sometimes not. Culture and benefits, msft win by far. Wlb superior compare to amazon. Remember kids, 10-20k more a year isnt everything in your life. Time for yourself is the real gold.

Makes sense. But I am not sure if Microsoft pays same as Amazon atleast for level below 63.

Lv61-62 is usually around 180-230. I think this is pretty comparable to amazon sde2. Dont forget other benefits from msft that adds extra 15k. Not to mention wlb...

It's usually the other way round.
Pay is similar upto SDE2/L62 level.
Our senior does not match to SDE3 at Amazon.

Worked at both. Benefits are way better. Msft gives 10k to your 401k and allows you to contribute an additional 27k via mega backdoor Roth. Free healthcare. $2000 HSA money. ESPP. Super Subsidized pharmacy with lots of OTC drugs and health items. 10 sick days and 15PTO vs 3 sick days and 10PTO

The work is the same. WLB is actually worse at a Microsoft for me. My on hire pay was more than Amazon. After 2 years it’s the same, after 4 it’s less. So unless they provide me with SSA I will leave (probably back to Amazon) after year 4

It is 15pto on 2nd year in Amzn. Are you in Azure? And before were in CDO at Amazon? If yes, then switch teams in MS. Or try Aws for “super wlb”.

Amazon doesn't allow for mega backdoor roth? Why not if it doesnt require anyone from the company?

I think Amazon TC is a tad bit more than Microsoft, just like FB pays a bit more than Google. But someone pointed out that there's 30k worth of Microsoft benefits over Amazon, so could be a wash.

One thing to consider for Amazon TC in year 3 and 4: it assumes 15% stock growth on an annual basis. Someone can correct me if this is incorrect.

Amazon pays more than MSFT is a myth or at least not something that is true universally. With respect to new hires, MS stock range is very wide so they can compete with Amazon. For their existing employees, they have gotten lot more competitive for the top performers after giving special stock awards couple of years back.

At Amazon now. Microsoft has more perks and I feel that Amazon expects 2x the output in the same time frame. That being said, given the pressure, I feel like I learn a lot more at amazon and have more responsibility and impact.

Microsoft also pays better than Amazon for new grads but falls way behind for 61-64. Microsoft offers the same tc for a new grad 59 as an industry hire 62.
