The Indians and Chinese I know are all smart and kind people, then I look at the countries they come from: what a shit show. Every government in Asia is either a dictatorship or deeply corrupt. We have our flaws in Europe and North America but the Asian countries take it to a whole other level of fucked. From Iran to India to China to Vietnam to Sri Lanka to the Central Asian countries and maybe you can include Russia. A whole continent of fucked, authoritarian, deeply corrupt and generally nasty government with routine violations of human rights. And yet it produces a lot of smart capable people. What gives?
There's no rule of law. Part of this is being ruled by multiple groups over the period. This means that contracts are hard to enforce and legal and political institutions are weak/non existent. This incentivizes players to take advantage of the game aka corruption. Acemoglu has a great paper on role of institutions in economic development. Google "acemoglu institutions" and you'll find the paper.
“Every” country is a dictatorship or corrupt? How about South Korea and Taiwan? They seem to be doing quite well economically with strong democracies
Both Taiwan and South Korean started as dictatorship then got transformed. I guess the other dictatorships learned the lesson and don't let the transformation happen in their countries.
South Korean economy and human rights are great, but it's definitely still a deeply flawed democracy at best.
Obviously cuz Western Civilization have been the Invaders and the Eastern countries didn't get their freedom from them until recently. Give them the same time from Independence as US and surely they'll be just as developed if not more
The west has also been invaders of themselves... Why was it that the east was in a position to be invaded in the first place & not the other way about?
If we gonna play that game I wondered who invaded who first...
You know what’s fucked? A country creating trillions in poisonous derivatives and selling them in global markets, climbing the charts in mass shootings around the world and quickly trending downward in various levels of education. These are to name a few. Yet, despite the flaws, I don’t think of United States as a shit show but believe this country has a lot of to contribute to the world. Guess you should take a look at the speck in your own eye?
You’re silly.
Give a proper rebuttal then 😉
India is the world's largest democracy. So not dictatorship. Even for corruption, I wouldn't rate it as bad as other asian countries
This is obviously a very complex topic, but one major reason is that a large section of the population are uneducated or have at best completed a primary level of schooling. As a result, they are often unaware of the lessons history can teach. Moreover, this section of the population often ends up with jobs that barely let them survive paycheck to paycheck. In these circumstances, they close their minds and gullibly listen to whatever they are told by the politician who tries to manipulate them emotionally, financially and socially. And then the governments formed by these politicians don't care about introducing basic facilities to the masses. It's a vicious circle.
I guess bunch of smart people can't alone solve the problems if majority sees the problems as compromise to live. That's why they have to migrate.
The mindset is to live with the problems or to leave. For smart people from those places it's not impossible to leave so those who can have left and are still leaving.
The west went through the same exact phases. Listening to a podcast right now about forced sterilization in the US
Not really the same. The West was always democratic in relation to those who were considered citizens. Strong belief in individual rights, freedom of expression, etc. However it's taken a long time to expand the definition of "citizen" to include everyone. So you get the paradox that a slave owner wrote the declaration of Independence. But it's not really a paradox, it just took awhile to extend those beliefs to include everyone. In Asia on the other hand there's no small core of people enjoying freedom, it's shitty for everyone.
You don’t seem to have your facts right. How was Europe historically more free / democratic than China? If anything China historically had more upwards mobility: all you need to do was to study and prepare for the government exam —race was not a factor at all. Whereas in Europe you have different Europeans hating on each other due to their ethnicity.

India and China are very different places. You can’t really summarize them together. Having a billion people puts you in a position to produce a lot of smart people, but what is the overall distribution of education as a whole in these societies? Apart from education what are the cultural and structural issues for each of them that creates difficulties?
All the Asian countries are very different, Iran and Russia are even more different, Cambodia is different, Burma is different, all very different, which is why it's astounding they all share this problem.
I think there’s also an aspect of age in a society. Its like the older the society the harder it is to get it up and running.
