Why doesn't Apple just abandon Siri and start over?

Siri is easily the weakest part of the Apple ecosystem, and it's comical how far behind it is compared to Google Assistant and Alexa. Instead of scrapping the engine and starting over, they release some bull shit complicated mess of an app called Shortcuts. Seriously has anyone tried to use it? It's awful. Apple needs a do-over when it comes to its virtual assistant.

The fact that you call shortcuts a bullshit complicated mess of an app makes me seriously question the google hiring bar lol

Honestly shortcuts is horrible. I set a shortcut on my home screen to open a specific note in Notes, and every time I tap it, it opens the Shortcuts app, jumps to safari, then jumps to Notes. All visibly to the user, and the whole process takes like a second and a half.

      OP
Byeangela - Put down your Apple colored glasses and think objectively for a second. Unless you worked on the Shortcuts app team, you should have no reason to defend it so vehemently. It's a horrible app whose only purpose for existence is because Siri can't understand a compound sentence or a second follow up sentence that's continuation of the previous sentence. So Apple's solution is to make the user design these interactions from scratch? Come on man.

Shortcuts is the one thing Siri does right. IFTTT is hard to do. And it’s reasonable. But Siri itself has been incremental upgrades every year from 2011 when it arrived. I’m very disappointed.

It’s not hard to fix but they need vision.

iPhone user here over a decade.. I don’t even remember when I used Siri last time...I have google and Alexa that I tend to use everyday..probably apple should stop investing on Siri, and rather invest those money in improving iPhone battery life..

Lol battery life is the only way they force you to buy the next iPhone. They'll never improve battery life - that'll kill sales

Siri is like if an airline only had one plane and it was an old airplane. It works enough for the base needs for their product family, but is below industry standard. Apple can’t start from scratch because of the tech debt and they can’t innovate it because they are too hardware focused to become an AI first company. Have you seen Apple software lately? It’s software developed without much testing and the company is siloed and doesn’t even do user research.

Haha please. Says the google person whose company (who I’ve also worked for) doesn’t know what one hand is doing compared to the other. Who basically uses its search and selling of our data revenue to throw every possible product/app/software at the wall and sees what sticks. I remember the chrome stick vs the nexus Q debacle because I was helping launch the Q when all of a sudden Chromecast came out RIGHT before the Q did. Took all the wind out the sails right before Xmas season so the huge launch planned was scrapped and they just released it to no fanfare. Apple really doesn’t do that kind of product blitzkrieg. Google is run by developers, who don’t even understand the concept of user research. They’ve gotten better over the years sure but you can’t say their better at Apple in that arena.

OP you are not taking it far enough - apple should really scrap the entire iOS ecosystem, iPhone, MacBook, etc and start over. The whole suite has been decades behind competitors and it would be better to start fresh than have this slow bleed. Not trolling.

And yet I’d rather use a MacBook than any other laptop, and an iPhone than any other phone. Not biased- I actually bought surface pros, chrome books, and pixels and they don’t compare. And don’t have much to add for the fire tablets.

“Not trolling” that’s a good one. The OS ecosystem is fantastic. A few of my friends have android devices and their “ecosystem” is nonexistent. Sure Siri might be behind Google but that’s nothing to throw the baby out with the bath water. Alexa is probably the best but that probably dependent on what you use your personal assistant for. I use it for quick facts or to add something to my shopping list that is directly tied to their shopping platform. I use Siri for music, weather, calendar events etc. it’s a matter of perspective and by your comment it’s like you have a very obtuse one.

They made improvements to that and sometimes the maps are more accurate. Google has brought me to the wrong block several times and Apple maps got it right.

@op i am curious- would you rather use siri which doesn’t use your private data to answer questions. Or some other assistant which relies on your private data collected over years.
Siri IMO is not that great in answering knowledge questions because of lack of data. For anyone trying to use it for productivity (calendar, reminders, messages efc) it works good.
    Feb 17 3
    • Nokia / IT Murica
While this might be true, not using Google Assistant won't stop the data collection anyway. You would have to stop using Google services altogether and most of us are as reliant on those as we are on our utilities.

Ask Microsoft how that messaging worked for Bing. Value to users always wins. And neither Microsoft then nor apple now not use data... Just different business models.

I think siri works good on Apple ecosystem for use cases like calendar, reminders, apple tv etc. yes its not great for use cases that involves understanding multiple accents or knowledge queries.

Apple is just bad at web services. OS and ux design is what they thrive in. The iPhone would not exist without dependencies on services from google and others

If Apple continues to not collect data to improve their algorithms, they will have a hard time developing good machine learning algorithms to beat Alexa and Google’s.

Siri needs to exist for all the ecosystem products as Apple will try to innovate and experiment with a new products eg. Apple Homepod. Integrating Google Assistant or Alexa is against their policy of monetising data.
