Why doesn't Netflix sell goods?

Seems like Disney, HBO and all the more traditional media companies make sure to fully use their IPSs. I mean Disney has Disney Stores dedicated for their goods and it's pretty normal for Disney or HBO or traditional media companies to collaborate with brands and come out with clothes, makeup, dolls, you name it....I don't know if it's just me, but I've never seen a Netflix collaboration. Why is that? I would totally buy a stranger things eye shadow palette! Why aren't you guys doing this? Do you not have the resources?

If you discovered a gold mine, would you spend your time mining gold, or opening up a lemonade stand outside?

If we’ve learned anything from the California Gold Rush, sell lemonade! 🍋 💰

I'd hire someone to work the lemonade stand whilst I keep mining.

The gold is over, now you are mining coal and calling it gold.

Open a Target ad, full on collection of stranger things items out now. Other than that, not everyone wants to be in the commodity/widget business.

    1. Margins on physical goods are not high

    2. Selling physical goods and managing their distribution channels is not Netflix’s core competency

    3. It took Disney many decades to get to where it is today, where it has multiple businesses. Netflix is barely a decade old.

    4. IP licensing can be tricky. Netflix may only own digital distribution rights for its content and no merchandizing rights

They do license their stuff. OP doesn’t seem to know what they are talking about.

Funko Pops, LEGO, tons of product placement/partnerships, etc. You can buy Netflix goods, Netflix just doesn't sell them directly.

What I want to know is why don’t they buy a music service like Spotify, then they can add music to their repertoire of movies and shows to make their bundle that much more attractive to people. I mean they offer TV and movies now, what’s the obvious thing missing? And they already have a huge paying install base, and tons of products shipping with their app on it, so from a user perspective it makes a lot of sense. I’m sure there is also a lot of user overlap that pay for both services, so it would benefit them as well, even if they charged a bit more for the add-on.

Lots of engineers ask This a lot. And the answer is - it’s a very bad idea business wise from every possible angle you look at it.

But you have no business experience so you are thinking like that, that’s okay but believe me, people who are experts know it’s a terrible idea for a company to loose focus when there is so much opportunity to focus on the main product

Why would IP owners want to license to Netflix? They have other avenues for that.

Netflix owns IP related to their original shows.

OP you need to go to Hot Topic - they have tons of stranger things Merch for sale. If you don’t think Netflix is licensing their IP out, you’re crazy - they just aren’t selling them direct themselves.
