Every poll and discussion, Google (or if Google isn’t listed, next top FAANG choice), tops the choice for recommendation. Even when it’s a worse choice in terms of everything except PrEStiGe. Between the choice of L6 at a newer startup / recently IPO’d one, where you have the choice of being a staff engineer, really get your hands into system design, owning parts of the system, pay of like $400k TC. Or google. L4, maybe $300k TC. No system design or anything, more or less just a code monkey. Why choose google? Is it for the future prospects in brings? Even at the hinderance of advancing your knowledge and impact?
My dude.. google is old news. Albertsons is the new hot place to be.
I would still interview with Google and if I may get an offer (L3/L4), that does not imply I would join Google. To me it is more about if I can clear the hiring bar. In the end, I will join a company which offers better TC and decent title.
> Even when it’s a worse choice in terms of everything except PrEStiGe. I can't quite follow. It's got good WLB, good payment, you can switch teams, smart colleagues. What's not to like?
the actual work! if you are doing anything interesting or challenging or valuable or fulfilling or if you are learning anything from it. or if you are working on some repetitive dumb task, or some pointless work you are assigned to just to keep you busy.
Because the vast majority of SWEs are in it for the money. L4 may be less money but you have the perceived prestige of Google and will open doors to more money in the future. Not saying I'd do that but I think that's what most people go for
Maybe because Google is kind of a safer option. Google is too big to fail vs at a startup, there are more risks involved but you will have opportunities to work on interesting stuffs.
google is too big to fail, but i do not think it is necessarily safer option. they have over-hired engineers like crazy in the past years; most doing nothing or working on tasks/products which they are assigned just so that to keep them busy. if google ever has to cut costs, it can easily axe a large chunk of its engineers with absolute no impact on its core products and cash cows. whereas if you are in a smaller company actually doing vital stuff for the company, the company has big incentive to keep you even during down turns.
But Google's main revenue is ad. I do not see any viable contenders for Google in this space. Facebook and Amazon have some presence but I dont think Facebook poses much of a threat to Google considering they're sticking to their own platform. Amazon can be a contender in the future. So what I was about to say is that I dont see Google facing a need to cut costs in the future, even in the case of recession (Ads still go on IMO). I have been working in a small company for the past two years and I know I'm valued a lot. But the uncertainty of the product succeeding gets to me sometimes. But that's just my opinion :)
You seem like you have already made your choice and you want blind to justify it. Google is a great company to work for, but if you have a better offer somewhere else that you think fits you better, you should absolutely take it.
I’m actually leaning towards google for the future it sets up. But just want to make sure I’m making a right choice.
What future does it setup? To work at another large company? Because if your end goal is to join a startup or even start one, Google won’t help with that. It all depends on what you’re aiming for.
Mind sharing your YOE, OP?

I would rather not pick google in this case. Dont listen to sheeple
Because people are brainwashed.. this isn’t 2015 anymore
