Why is SalesForce considered a great place to work?

Offer barely matches (that too with a one time joining bonus) my current salary. My Microsoft benefits are pretty good and we even have free food now - at least in the bay area. Other than slight difference in tech, what is the compelling reason to join SalesForce.. also do folks from FB, Amazon and Google really move to SalesForce?

If you’re not a software engineer, it’s probably better than other places. But it’s definitely not a great place if you are in software.

I also agree. Salesforce is a marketing and sales company, most statements about employee quality of life are for them. In general if you’re a software engineer you’ll have a better life somewhere else. And you’ll get paid more lol

Why da fuc they have Hawaiian shirts and garlands? This is Seattle yo.. No sun.. All rain.. I think the employees are sad because they were promised an office in Hawaii, but instead got Seattle..

LOL... that’s pretty horrible look. When I first saw that picture I knew that’s not a happy place. Total PR and recruiting fail. I mean damn, you should have given them some good news like cash bonus for everyone or something before the first photo snaps.

I love the Bellevue office. Has views of the lake and mountains. Free espresso bar staffed with barista and kitchen full of snacks are great too. Friends who have visited love the offices too. Yeah, the whole decor honestly seems cultish, but it’s fine after you get over it’s cheesiness.

Infra works on new shiny things and has stronger colleagues.
Srini's org has more of an old stuff but more relaxed.

Overall wlb is good, pay is not bad, we do have folks who switched from Amazon, google, and Facebook. A lot of ex-bing and ex-azure folks in Seattle but culture is different from MSFT. Politics exist but way better than MSFT and easily ignorable on the level below VP. Colleagues are very collaborative. A lot of groups work and contribute to open source projects. Overall I am lucky to work with really sharp folks but none of the Srini's guys made past infra's screening on my memory. YMMV.

Somehow all these ex MSFT, ex Amazon etc folks managed to get offer that exceeds what they were earning or owere offered in other places.

Stock refresh is not guaranteed and quite a few folks roll on to relaxed or do not understand expectations and never see stock refresh as result.
Yes, FB and google may offer bigger paycheck.

Easy to move between groups within infra.

I.e. for me commute to salesforce is significantly better than commute to FB or Google, benefits are decent, and for the first time in 20 years I have weekends and evenings that I can spend with family, guaranteed. I can work from home 2-3 days a week, I learn new things and don't remember dealing with a single asshole during my tenure.
I guess I'll stay for another year and see if my stock refresh next year exceeds this year's.

    Again, YMMV.

When I first watched Silicon Valley I knew that Hooli was loosely based on Google, but after I joined Salesforce I kept thinking about how it is literally Hooli. It’s kind of cult-like, and a lot of problems are left ignored to perpetuate this idealistic “Ohana”-#1CRM-BestCompanyToWork2018-culture. If your team is good, you’ll probably be fine, but there are definitely a lot of politics and bad egg managers/“directors” that can make work life shitty

Salesforce is most definitely NOT less political. Imagine 5000 engineers hungry to solve interesting problems but being forced to use outdated tech to solve uninteresting problems other companies solved 15 years ago.

Starved hungry engineers + boring work = ravenous fights over the smallest technically interesting problems. Epic Game Of Thrones as the managers squabble over ownership and the executive leadership can only watch in despair because #Ohana.

Stay at MSFT in my opinion.

Good work life balance (usually). But that's it. No yearly RSU refresh so if Microsoft provides that, then you're getting a pay cut to go to Salesforce.
    Mar 30, 20182
    • Microsoft / EngAmIEwok
Microsoft does give refreshers in about the same amount as your bonus, in my experience. It’s not based on your base, but it might as well be.

For Seattle the offer is much more competitive provided if you do well in the interview. Wlb is better and people are much nicer than ms. More coding time and less meeting also. Agree on the outdated tech.

      Mar 31, 2018
    • Salesforce / EngUSKFODRCEH
It is relative. If you like high data volumes/transaction counts, a large/diverse customer base, web apps, kubernetes, and other “platform” like things then Heroku is interesting.

Salesforce is big. The main CRM is old tech but there's also a lot of newer tech. I mean we bought a bunch of companies so it's not all old inside. Infra has newer tech, but WLB may not be as good as you may be expected to be somewhat on call to support your service
    Mar 30, 20185
    • Salesforce editprof
One other thing. Salesforce is moving to shared seating... meaning you won't have a dedicated seat anymore. You have to clean up every day before you leave. If you're in tech and product then you're currently exempt from this, but it's no doubt coming. So if that bothers you, you should consider it.
