Just finished my undergraduate degree in cs from UC Berkeley. And I am from Srilanka. And all my co-workers constantly keep suggesting me to do my masters. My manager once mentioned it too. Every co-worker of mine has a masters degree. I am the only undergraduate. Is it because I am on f1 ? I know it's pretty rare for an undergraduate international student. Is it too soon to leave VMware ? I am not liking the evil eyes I am getting here. Why the hell would I pursue an MS after spending all this money on my BS ?
What did they say the benefits are?
Apparently, it increases my h1b chances, not sure how immigration works in this country. H1b is a work authorization visa if you're unaware
What they said is true. But if you're fine with risking it, just tell them you don't care about that 😁
It’s up to you to figure out if there is ROI I’m getting a masters in your field or one you want to move into. In some fields you can initially command more salary but that seems to decrease as you reach those levels without it and gain real world experience instead. Maybe it helps you level up faster, maybe not.
Also I didn’t take H1B into account in my response but I saw your other comment related to it. I have no idea on how a masters impacts H1B.
Depends on the field of your study and the correlation of employability with education level. You seem to be around smart people (or find the smartest ones and talk to them), so better ask them to provide the most compelling reasons for getting a Masters degree.
Just noticed you studied C.S. Well, degrees are unnecessary especially since you already have the UCB pedigree. I'll say skip Masters and gain real world experience.
Masters is not needed if you can get a good job after Bachelors. It’s just the mentality of Asian people to study more!
Don't waste your time if you graduated from Cal. If you want guaranteed GC get married to a citizen. Try to find someone you know that's less attractive.
I see lots of job postings that say Masters "preferred". How long until job postings say "required"? 50 years ago probably job postings said bachelor's "preferred"...most now say required.
But they definitely accept equivalent experience or knowledge. I know a few folks working at fairly prestigious companies where it’s unlikely their job posting didn’t say “bachelors required” but they definitely don’t have one.
Because they are stupid lemmings thinking you need it.
