Why people here hate Amazon so much

Amazon productive

I have been working in Amazon for 2 years. 1 re-org, 1 promotion.

I work from 9:30 - 5:30 with 1 hour of lunch in the middle, I am only 50-75% actively working during my work hours as well, I make tea, great espressos (you are right their coffee sucks), take naps, get out for a walk, chit-chat with teammates...

I do 1 on call shift per 1.5 month and last 3 oncall shifts I got paged like once or twice, I got only 2 wake-up-from-sleep pages during my 2 years.

Work is 30% operation, 70% new features. Both managers are pretty good, my current one is excellent. not even heard of any back stabing politics that people mentioned. Never had a hard deadline, if it slips it slips.

Free beer and snacks at all time, no one cares if you leave work early for some personal reason, WFH every now and then...

I don't know what people are talking about on here...

Because you haven't run out of the initial grant. There are teams in Amazon that are truly innovative and have great talent and culture. However, your compensation will suffer after year 4 if you do not get top tier rating or get promoted again.

Yes we get stock but not competitive unless you are top tier (top 20%)

Here is an example, in 2019 the L6 SDE band is 250k to 378k. Usually if you are hired as L6, you will be offered close to the top of the band. If you are internally promoted, you will start at the bottom of the band from 250k.

Unless you perform at top 20%, your target comp is the bottom of the band which is 250k. As an solid but not top tier L6, you should be making 350k+ while Amazon only wants to pay you 250k. That's why many people are not happy with the model. It was okay in the last few years because amzn skyrocketed and everyone got more than Amazon wanted to pay us. When the growth slows down and people start running out of initial grant, complaints start piling up. You are not there yet but it will happen soon

Sure, I know that. So bascially a mid grade L5 in Google pay the same as Top 20% Amazon L6 (counting the taxes and stuff). I mean... our bar is lower...

Our bar is indeed lower but we have some great talent here. For some star team, we have more than 30% people that will clear bar for other companies, for people that are rated top tier, they have incentive to stay. If you are in 70 percentile but just shy of top tier, you are pretty fucked and severely underpaid.

I do agree with you that the group I mentioned above is not majority but it's quite common in core AWS teams imo. I think 70 or even 60 percentile of good Amazon employee can clear other top companies bar. They complain because they will need to prepare for interview while they want to stay at Amazon but Amazon don't want to provide competitive TC to keep them

I agree with your opinion here. I personally would love to try out different companies. I do have a big SDE3 promo grade project right now, So I plan to finish that, see how the comp goes after my 4th year and hop to a different company to take a look.

Good luck! I think Amazon is a great place to learn and grow, and the low TC (I consider it as tuition) well worth it. L6 is a big milestone and almost every company will give you a lot of credit for hitting it and will offer competitive TC when you are ready to switch.

I was on the same boat and switched immediately once I hit my 4th year mark and got an 50% raise. I am still very grateful for Amazon and I think it's a great place to be in.

Not sure if this is true in other orgs especially AWS

majority of outsiders seem to have formed an opinion based on NYT article.

I definitely agree that Amazon has lot btr wlb than blind folks think.
