Why so many people says Samsung has toxic culture?

Actually, I work here. But I don’t get why many people says working here is bad because of the culture. Let’s give examples. For staff engineer, the base is around $200,000 with about 15% cash bonus . And almost every time you can get 100%~150% of the promised bonus. Also for perks, they have the best cafeteria in the Bay Area. Only one free lunch, for extra food you have to pay $3 each. But the quality of the food is the best which make the paying for food thing okay for me. Not every company serves premium sushi (including oysters and sea urchin) very day. They also have gridded New York steak for you and Korean food... and the morning breakfast closes at 10:00 am, dinner opens at 6:00 pm. Nobody work extra hours. The building is dark after 7. No one is there.... I didn’t get it why the work life balance is bad...

Used to work at Samsung. Great people. Good manager. Only one really bother. No ownership of the product. No reason command from Korean. Just before u finish, new command arrive with totally different directions. Every lab can be different, but Samsung does have Asian culture . Samsung need burn their inventory again. Good product only need one per year, not 10 or 100 per year.

I agree the HQ in Korean makes the decision... but as a independent contributor... I really don’t care...I care only about the food they serve and don’t push me to work after 6 pm or work in the weekends. I worked here for two years. Never work extra hours .

Cheap Cafeteria food is the motivation, I get it. Good for you.

What about rsu?

Dell Sabuu Nov 19, 2018

No rsu. They don’t give away stocks

Samsung freesam OP Nov 19, 2018

Not true.

Nvidia :@ Nov 19, 2018

True for Koreans in Korea. Who knows how much of that culture has transferred here

Dell Sabuu Nov 19, 2018

I had interview with SSD team and everyone was Korean. They even talk Korean with each other in front of me!

Samsung freesam OP Nov 19, 2018

That’s true... but I don’t care... I also talk my own language in front of Koreans and they don’t mind... maybe we are not as sensitive as you

Dell Sabuu Nov 19, 2018

I don’t have a thin skin too but for interview session it is a little rude I think

This is insightful, I would have guessed Samsung was a sweatshop

Samsung freesam OP Nov 19, 2018

You should go to the 1st St Samsung cafeteria and check the Lunch. I doubt even LinkedIn has better food thank ours though their food is free... but I am okay with paying for good stuff with just $3-$5

Intel 10% ESPP! Nov 19, 2018

Can anyone go and get food?

Intel (⌐■_■) Nov 19, 2018

Well, shit, let me put Samsung San Jose on the radar for new job req searches. As a previous partner and vendor for their products, yes, when Koreans get mad they freakin' let you know. But also been on the flip side as a potential customer of Samsung, where they wine and dine you. I know they work you to death in Korea though (had Korean friends that were Samsung vets.)

Cisco Infensus Nov 19, 2018

Literally the only thing good about Korean culture is the eating/dining aspect. Search YouTube for Korean school lunches to see how it is. Everything else is Confucian oppression though.

And the plastic surgery. Those surgeons are miracle workers. Of course the girls come out looking like real-life anime characters, but that works well if you are a K-pop star.

Samsung freesam OP Nov 19, 2018

I just want to get fair comparison. Don’t say the work life balance is bad if you mean the Korean girls come out the same... or the Korean worker worked too hard... or you have a bad impression of Koreans culture... it doesn’t hurt me directly and is irrelevant to wlb...in my observation, most other companies who claimed to have better wlb serves crappy food and ask people to do on call or even work in the weekends or evening.... that’s not what good wlb mean

I have never worked for Samsung and have no desire to do so. From what I know.... it's an Asian culture. If you're not one of them (Korean and probably with connections) you are fucked and will be destined working outside of the inner circle no matter how hard you try. No thanks.

Samsung freesam OP Nov 20, 2018

You seems have prejudice over Asian cultures. The charm of American culture makes you feel good about yourself even though you are fucked. Please give concrete examples between fair comparison if you want to convince me that Asian culture is bad.

Palo Alto Networks OlCI53 Nov 20, 2018

Let me guess - are you Korean??
