Why the fuck am I paying SS tax and Medicare as a H1?

I just switched in status from F1 to H1 and now my paycheck is way lower due to social security tax and Medicare. Why the fuck am I paying for this when I'm not getting the benefits of them. This is bullshit! How do I opt out?

You can opt out by going back to F1 status or the country you are originally from.

I agree with the sentiment, but this is a poor answer. OP would have to pay taxes towards welfare in their own country too.

Truth is, OP would complain about any taxes they could justify not paying.

You guys are not getting my point!!! Of course I want to pay taxes. But I'm already paying Federal and State Taxes. Why do they need to add two more? I'm still seeing homeless people around in SF and it's still dirty. So where exactly is the extra tax on Social Security and Medicare going to?
    Oct 26, 2018 7

Social security is only accessible to those who are both retired, and paid into social security through taxes while they were working. Homeless people usually fulfill neither of those requirements, so they don't benefit from social security

Duh...it’s going towards the social security pension pool and the Medicare insurance pool. This has nothing to do with the hobos on the street other than the fact that if we didn’t pay into this we’d have millions more senior citizen hobos on the street.

The working pay for the retired. That's the way it works. You aren't paying for yourself you are paying for others.

Most Americans are confused by this as well.

People are worry about whether they would ever have career and life stability on H1B and you worry about a minuscule amount of money withheld for the society? Strange. Also, this tax fight is not worth fighting. Give in and pay up.

There should be two types of H1.
First is when temp workers do not pay SS taxes and go back after 6 year term. No immigration forms can be filed on their behalf.
And second, whatever current H1B rules are. Pay taxes and file anything you want and allowed by the law.

No one invited h1b holders, They applied to the companies on their own volition. They went to the embassy themselves and were granted visas with the condition they will follow existing laws. Now if they dont seem to agree with the laws no one can stop them from leaving either. If they have great ideas why not apply them to their country of origin? I dont agree with many things here either and will vote accordingly but there is no guarantee things will turn out my way. Thats how life is, its sometimes fair and sometimes not.

H1B is a visa which requires an employer to petition. No random person can file for H1B visa on their own. I agree with the rest of what you said.

Taxation without representation was a catch phrase for going to war with the king for independence. Not for guest workers here on temporary work visas earning massive salaries.

This is a nationality-based difference in taxation/benefits. Stupid gap in bilateral or multi-lateral rules. Don't confuse with left or right agenda. These things don't get discussed anywhere except by those who deal with the processes.

It's not bullshit. By paying SS as a non American, you earn credits that you can use to claim SS retirement later, even if you're a non citizen and don't retire in the US, I think.

You can get up to four credits a year up to a max of 40, or something like that.

SS is a ponzi scheme you cannot get out of. If you complete 10 years of working in the US, you can hope to claim it in retirement if your country has an agreement with US by then, or if you come back to the US for about a month every year. It's convoluted and sucks.

Go lobby your government in the country of your origin to help you get SS benefits. You don't have any other leverage here. (See my other comments)
      Oct 26, 2018
  • SS and Medicare is earned benefits, it is like paying for “Navaratri / ganpati decoration” whether you participate in it or not, as a part of apartment complex you need to contribute if you move in...
If you don’t like it, you are welcome to go to Somalia or DR of Congo, or Where-ever you want.

A better analogy - it is like you're not allowed to participate unless you live in specific unit numbers whose residents are buddies or if they reside on the first two floors of the 4 -story condo.

What you are pointing out is a different problem - these folks who can't participate in the festivities are generally awesome in complaining, but when it comes to actually ask the association about fixing this issue, all of have more important pani Puri parties to attend.

Also, the Employer has to pay SS taxes as well and if you don’t pay SS taxes on H1 , it makes it cheaper for the employer to hire you over a GC holder or an American citizen.

No, you should be in a country that has an agreement with the US or in the US one month a year. You need to have 40Q/10y of SS tax contributions.

You guys are all idiots. It is fair for someone on H1B who might never see the light of Green Card to feel that SSM taxes are a forced charity and whose benefits they cannot reap.
They know very well that it is part of the deal. They are just complaining that it is an unfair deal given that US is a country of immigrants.

OP: If you are are from India or China (otherwise you'll get GC in a few USCIS farts), you'll get SS benefits if you work for at least 40 quarters in the US. https://www.ssa.gov/international/countrylist4.htm
So assume that you are paying for your retirement similar to 401k.
