Just went on vacation to some Asian countries (Japan, Singapore, South Korea) and all the major cities seem so much more advanced than San Francisco. There aren't any homeless people and the streets are so clean. Will San Francisco ever be like that?
It’s not a bug it’s a feature
Not until they stop giving them heroin
Until other cities stop bussing their homeless there and they reopen the mental hospitals nothing will change
Some cities you mention have more flexible zoning laws that allow residential building almost anywhere. When SF allows that, homelessness will be solved in short order.
Did we not come up with a GoFundMe to fight a homeless shelter? Yeah, city should drive the effort, who’s and how are we gonna hold (crazy) rich people accountable?
Not even a homeless shelter, a navigation center where people would get counseling and help. It would only stay open two years before being torn down and people are up in arms over it.
I think that some of this is a macro issue, some of this is a micro issue. The macro issue is our country’s appalling appetite for drugs and poor healthcare system (mental health). Fix those and that should hopefully reduce the homelessness. On the micro level, San Francisco needs to allow more housing. That seems to be a zoning/NIMBY issue.
Exactly, the BOS was against SB50 which would have gone some of the way to alleviating the problem.
This is easy to alleviate by building as much dense housing as possible. But zoning laws and nimbyism prevents this. They only want the highest paid folks working here and soon they too won’t be able to afford the prices without getting themselves in debt for a long time
SB50 would have gone some of the way to solving this but the BOS was against it and it died in the legislature anyway. SF needs to build more densely and refuse to negotiate with developers who want to pay their way out of offering a certain percentage of their units to low income or section 8 people.
This is a safety net and mental health issue. Those other countries actually care for their poor people and will help them out. San Francisco is not the only city in the country with a homeless problem. Almost every city in the US has a problem.
It a liberal utopia! Why would they ever want to solve the problem? Heroin needles, poop on the sidewalk, and high-crime is all part of the wonderful plan!
Can we stop with the talking points? Any specific left wing policies you can pin point which has led to this problem? Please look up how the federal funding for mental health institutions has been cut by predominantly GOP legislators for several years now.
As far as I know, drugs are never allowed and possessing or selling heorin is a felony crime in clean cities in Japan and Korea. However, liberal policies decriminalized drug possession and trade, which led to spike of heorin use on street and increase of crime rate. Ban drug, lock up drug dealers and treat all the drug addicts, homeless population will soon diminish
Not until the liberals are run out
Never miss an opportunity to be partisan. Many (most) of the clean international cities people cite have “liberals” and sometimes even socialists in elected office.
@microsoft please clarify?
