what are your thoughts on the stadia so far? will you be purchasing one yourself? how do you think itll fare?
Can barely afford the broadband cap overages from my video streaming.
I'm excited to spend a lot of money on games at full price and then have Google get hired with the service in 1 year and cancel 2 years from now like all their products so I lose my games.
Full price + 30% markup, don't forget about the app store charges ...
I for one am excited about a cheap console alternative without download or install times or long loading screens and still running 4k games. if it works as advertised, traditional consoles will have a hard time competing
I could, and it’d probably work pretty well since im on Google Fiber, but I won’t because I’m not a fan of the amount of control it gives corporations over what would have been my property. I’m not the core consumer though so ill offer my thoughts from that perspective: 1. Most people dont have great internet, even in the US. That’s a huge problem, let alone outside of the US. No matter what servers or encoding magic you use, this will remain true for the foreseeable future. 2. One of the main reasons i even have a PC is to mod games, again, not a core consumer, but trying to displace PC will never happen. They should focus on exclusives that make use of the fact that many players will be on the same internal network. 3. Stadia needs to make it feel like you *own* a game, even if you don’t. If they try to be the netflix of gaming it will flop. People want their own saves, stream captures, they don’t want games to disappear. This is an ominous threat from Sony should Google ever feature Sony games on Stadia, since like with Netflix and Disney, they can pull content any time in favor of PS4 Now, let alone Microsoft and all the rest.
your point #3 is very opinionated but there is evidence that it isn't very accurate on terms of ownership for console players: Xbox gamepass has been very successful for Microsoft evidenced by how much they keep expanding it to PC and bundle with games with gold as well. additionally, stadia has made it clear that there will be games for sale just like on the ps, nintendo or msft stores. I agree on the challenges on the current network infra in the US as a limitation which remains my main reason to be skeptical. when the cost of entry is just $100 or even less if you already have a Chromecast HD, I'm jumping into the experiment not even too worried about the worst case scenario
Games for “sale” but still licenses that can be revoked at any time. I’m sure there’s legal agreements with Microsoft and Sony which stipulates something like, if you publish a game on our platform it can end up on our streaming services. Microsoft and Sony are both the hardware owners handing out licenses to publish games and IP owners in many cases, and hold a significant amount of control over IP that hits their hardware. Google isn’t an IP owner and presumably they will be using PC versions of games, they probably won’t have as much control to use licenses in perpetuity on their service. It’s most likely going to be the content providers licensing their games *to Google* which makes this a huge Netflix-like mess. That’s why I suspect even if it became the killer service Google wants it to be, it’ll start being crowded out just like Netflix is now.
WTFs a stadia?
I don’t (have time to) play video games
Purchased the founders pack or whatever the hell that bundle is called. The idea is cool, let’s see the execution.
No. I already have too many platforms and too large a backlog. Ala Carte gaming is fine for me.
Annoying for devs because you have to port the game to Linux using stadias SDK. Maybe interesting for Unity or Unreal games, but a pain for almost AAA studio. I predict it will be DOA, like the Ouya.
What does it even mean to purchase a stadia? The game controller? The service will likely sell as a monthly subscription, like Netflix
They have mostly confirmed that it won’t be a straight Netflix subscription system, and you’ll still need to purchase games through Stadia.
they announced a pro subscription which includes free games like ps plus or Xbox gold and a free subscription where all games are bought individually. I'm assuming OP is referring to the November launch which includes the controller and three months of pro, and a couple other things
