Ladies and gents, I’m about to join Google as a TPM in a few weeks and hoping to crowdsource some wisdom. Doesn’t have to be a Google-specific as the TPM role seems fairly universal in the big tech firms :) For example, what are some of your biggest lessons learned? Both as a TPM, PgM or as a SWE working with either of those. As SWEs, do you wish your TPMs or PgMs were better at some things or paid more attention to other things? My impression before starting is that the emphasis is on project management, in addition to having some domain knowledge on whatever project or product being assigned to. Agile/scrum sldc and being able to make sure everyone plays their part, especially product managers/owners prioritizing backlogs. Obviously engineers are the top dogs and will need to develop good rapport with. From interviews it seems some teams can be a bit chaotic and fast-moving while others are slower and more rule-bound. Either way I’m psyched! Tc 250, yoe 9.
TPM = Technical Product Manager?
Technical Program Manager
Correct! Technical Program Manager
Just move fast in Cafe lines, don't fill 3 boxes at a time. Other than that do whatever you want.
Sent you a DM
Congrats!
What level did you get in at? L5?
