Need advise! Been working for a tech consulting firm in India, recently I came to know about the online MS offerings (OMSCS), which seems very promising. Is it worth pursuing OMSCS at this stage? I am married & have kids, living happily with wife and kids. The only motivation for MS is career advancement and to some extent getting an opportunity to do it from a reputed university. I am concerned about the time commitment required (as long working hours, travel time, and then taking care of kids leaves little energy left) & career betterment prospectives that OMSCS would provide? Anyone who has a better understanding or first-hand knowledge, please advise. YOE: 10+ TC: not significant enough to mention (India) Update 06/2020: Finally decide to go for it, into the program 02 down out of 10. I am still not sure of benefits post-program, though this program comes with a lot of learnings.
+1
In my opinion a masters will only help if you have no experience. Some times companies substitute a higher degree for may be a couple of years experience. You are already experienced. Now many big companies don’t even require a college degree. I don’t know much about online degrees and how rigorous the program actually is. But if it is anything like what I went through then you’ll have a hard time balancing work and studying. People have done executive MBAs whilst working so it is not impossible but I don’t believe the payoff will be worth the stress. If all you need is a better job and don’t want to leetcode all the time, may I suggest joining something like Interview Kickstart and their ike. Courses like this will be definitely condensed and prep you well for an interview. They cost a fraction of what an online degree will cost you. I do know a few folks who went through these courses and ended up with upwards of 4 offers. If you do decide to pursue a masters please go through the graduate catalog and see what courses you’ll need to take. That should give you a fair idea if the curriculum is to your liking and they have courses that interest you.
IK is too rigorous for someone with limited CS background
Georgia Tech curriculum is the best .Also it is very very difficult to complete . Drop off rates are very high . Minimum you need to put around 40 hrs a weeks for 6 units . The advantage is it’s less expensive like 7.5 K for the whole course and from a top tier school . Easily you will make more than what you are making . My friend is struggling with just 3 units a semester . They have the latest ML/A.I. courses ...I will suggest to go for it and work hard ..it’s worth it
Contacts will help you. Take a look at the MS curriculum and decide if you need it. MS to get an H1B is another story.
NO
Why are you leaving your happy wife and kids? This is why I’ll never get married to men.
Consulting typically requires travel
@thickmama1: not leaving, just want to ensure that they remain happy.
