Work culture / growth for a new grad Product Manager at Atlassian?

My other options are Microsoft, Yelp, Yahoo, and Workday, all for APM roles. Assuming equal compensation, how would you rank these offers? Primarily looking for learning opportunity and personal growth, as a new grad.

Offers being equal, the smaller the company the more you will grow.

Will be biased towards Atlassian. If comp is same across other offers, look towards growth, team and culture of the company.

Atlassian where? Working in Sydney would be pretty great

I was going to ask this too. Sydney is pretty cool but there are a lot of additional opportunities in San Francisco.

Pick Yelp so you can stay in sf.

Atlassian has two SF offices and one in Mountain View.

I’m assuming that the Atlassian role is just as a new grad PM and not an Associate Product Management role. Based on that assumption, I’d order them as:

    1. Microsoft
    2. Yahoo
    3. Workday
    4. Yelp
    5. Atlassian

Atlassian is last because it won’t have the same accelerated learning and work components that all the APM roles will have. Microsoft is first because of the large scope of the company, which means you’ll have a greater pool of talent to chose your mentors and the products that you work on. Yahoo second (yes, I’m biased) because there is an opportunity to build a bunch of brand new products and learn that part of the lifecycle—and there are some pretty talented product people here that would be good mentors. Workday next because they have a fairly solid product suite, but there is still a lot of opportunity for them to grow and refine their products. Yelp next mainly because I don’t know much about their strategy beyond reviews and ordering takeout.

How is morale at Yahoo? Is there still investment being made in tech, or has it become more of a media company now? I really liked everyone I met over there, but I'm really worried about the negative brand hurting me when I look for my next job.

It is a fair question and concern. My individual point of view is that morale right now is still in a bit of a wait and see mode. We recently got to see the 2018 strategy for each of the orgs...personally, there were 2 or 3 that I found really cool and was even thinking about switching teams to go and work on some of the new products that were being discussed. There were also a few org strategies that made no sense and were uninspiring.

Regarding tech vs media, I actually think of it in a slightly different manner. I believe that the big opportunity is to turn Verizon into a more robust company that can deliver an even greater set of value to our users and businesses.

I started at MSFT right out of school many years ago and it was great - lots of structured learning. We have hired new or fresh PMs at DocuSign and there was tons of room for growth and learning as the company grew but less structure around it. I would look at who your direct manager would be to get a sense of culture and how much they might invest in your growth since this will have the largest impact at smaller/growth companies

Are you still hiring APMs? I’m very interested in the role and want to get out of engineering. DocuSign would be cool company to work for ☺

It really depends on the area of focus for each group.

    Can you list the area(s)?
