Got reached out to for a role at EA.

The work seems interesting but I’ve heard mixed things about their work culture.

What should I expect for TC?

YOE: 3
Role: TPM

Thank you

Rounds of layoffs after releases, at least at the EA Tiburon office. If you're early-career, and really want to get into the game industry, it's not the worst move. But I overall wouldn't recommend it.

EA tiburon layoffs? That doesn’t really happen for the sports franchises and hasn’t really happened to any game studio recently that wasn’t completely shut down. Crunch and layoffs on the games side at EA have been mitigated the past 10+ years due to contractor hiring

I heard game companies are high stress. Ask about crunch

If you don't know about crunch, don't even bother considering EA, man. Serious.

Game companies are stupid places to work where morons go to suffer.

      Are you a moron?

      Probably not.

      Forget about EA.

    • Crunch is usually for game teams. Since OP is working for a non-game team, do not really need to worry about that.

    depends.
Game team (studio) = higher pay and work on a game product that's usually interesting, some crunch around launch time.
Central team = Avoid like the plague. Toxic culture.

I’ve done hiring in both and level for level, EADP pays more and levels positions higher at posting than game teams. In addition, many positions on the game teams are contractors and not RFT. Game teams absolutely get paid less, which is standard in the industry. Game studios across the industry simply do not pay well. EADP and central teams are paid on the scale of a regular technology company, the game studios pay is in line with other game studios in the industry which is significantly lower than comparable jobs at other tech companies.

    • yeah well if your comparison is a contractor and QA yeah of course. But for Software Engineer roles no. I'm in leadership and I've seen the comp bands on both sides 🙃 just the bonuses alone push TC way up where is very common in the studio I work now to have individual modifiers of 130% - 150%, something unheard of in the EADP groups.

It’s depends on your team or even studios. Every company has its PROS and CONS. If it’s your hobby, you should be fine.

I would not recommend EADP. There’s almost no black, Latino or LGBT people at all. You’ll be targeted and discriminated for being different or even voicing different opinions

    • woah that's crazy. I work on the studios organization and the opposite is true. A good balance of diversity both racial, gender, age, and nationalities. A strong culture too (with its pros and cons) But I can see central teams not being like that.
