Work laptop accident

Accidentally mistook my work laptop for my personal one last night. Watched sexually explicit material (porn) on it for a couple of hours, with the VPN connected, before I realised the mistake.

What are my chances of getting fired? Should I fess up to my manager or HR before they confront me?

Go to HR and check if the porn you watched is on the approved porn vendor list. Be sure to give them detailed description of what you viewed so that they can determine if it fits within company guidelines.

What is wrong with porn? Everyone does/views it sometimes. It would be unethical/hypocrisy to fire you for that.

  • Go home tonight and watch more porn, except make it gay porn this time.

This way, if they try to fire you, you can claim discrimination! And make big money!

Delete cache and make sure you check your screen before making and presentation. Nothing to worry about.

    Huh, Amateurs!

You got nothing on the guy who watched porn on his work laptop (WinXP). Went to sleep, and then connected his system to the conference room PA as he was the kick off presenter the next day at office. The room was in rapt attention with the SLT of Wipro seeing and hearing this stuff being projected 😆

Needless to say he was immediately sacked and escorted off premise.

    • Let me tell you my story:
I was on a long work trip working at a satellite office. I had downloaded porn on a work laptop. The next day my laptop's hard drive crashes and I was without a working computer. I had to give it to the satellite offices IT guy to get it fixed. After IT returned me a working computer, my Director who was also on the trip called me into an office. He told me IT had found porn as that was found on the computer and that was grounds for termination. However, I was so critical to the team that they let it slip. I dodged a bullet big time!

As long as it was legal for the site (re over 18, consensual) and not bittorrent, I wouldn't be too concerned. If you don't hear anything about it for the next 3 months, you probably won't ever.

Separate from the issue of violating the terms of your employment agreement, even though you probably won’t get busted or even scolded (which is well covered in this thread), y’all muthaphuckas need to stop watching porn and re-tool your minds with respect to dealing with the opposite sex.

I agree with the first part, but question the second.

Definitely everyone should have a healthy work/personal life separation. Don’t do personal stuff on a work computer.

Who in the hell said anything about “disrespect”? “With respect to” doesn’t mean what you think it means.

And you’re right about opposite vs same. And the point still stands.

Some companies care, some do not. Almost any company can use it to justify getting rid of you for cause if that benefits them at some point/

"What are my chances of getting fired?"

100% at some point in the future. Big companies collecting data is like the NSA collecting data, they have a lot of shit on you, but it's harmless until they decide to look at it.

So yeah, just be wary that your employer has this thing over your head, and can fire you for cause, without notice, at some time in the future, if you piss them off.

Exactly my point or defuse this particular instance now and getting them to respond with a write up or something. Thatvwill stop them for using it as the sole reason for firing for cause.

Just be prepared to list a few LP that watching porn reinforces: diving deep, learn and be curious, insist on the biggest boobs, and so on

So you don’t have a gaffe later during a meeting where you’re sharing your screen and the browser autocompleted the URL.

I worked at the company a long time. Unless something changed in their policies over the last year, they aren’t actively tracking employees. It would take an SVP signing an order to actively monitor you which wouldn’t happen.

not sure what everyone is talking about saying OP will be fine. i got busted for watching a risqué music video at home on my work laptop. this was *not* even over the VPN!!!! but they were able to record my screen for approximately 2 weeks - regardless of connection type. this was "mis-use of company resources." 😒 it was 10 years ago and at a company with terrible tech capabilities, generally considered very behind-the-times, always. so if theyre able to do this magic (presumably with a COTS solution?) then i dont even wanna know Amazon can do.
i wouldnt proactively say anything, but would maybe consult a labor attorney in preparation for some unpleasantness from HR.

This does depend somewhat on company policy but assuming is not on work time is generally not a huge deal at most tech companies now. Policies years ago were probably more strict.
