People that work at Netflix, what are you thoughts

"... based on an extensive profile of the company’s culture, the streaming company certainly seems to have built a unique version of corporate hell."

Netflix runs like a pro sports team. That's all. Not everyone wants a job like that, and it's OK.

Assuming you’re talking about the players, some do, most don’t.

I said runs like a pro sports team, not paid like pro sports team. The bar is much lower too.

I certainly get that impression whenever I talk to my ex-Yahoo buddies at Netflix. For the kind of pay you get at Netflix, you really expect them to feel enthusiastic about it. But that’s not the case. Those that used to be very happy people became zombies at Netflix.

I’m not sure it’s that bad. This is obviously an opinion piece written from a specific perspective.

Every company has its own culture that helps create a path to its success or collapse. There’s tons of people from other FANG and non fang that are constantly complaining about poor performing employees that get away with their lack of effort or talent. Netflix is essentially saying, if you’re not essential then we don’t need you. It’s a solution to the complaint.

It’s probably not carried out perfectly and I’m sure politics get involved but at the end of the day I doubt people are complaining about dealing with poor performing employees. Not only that but they compensate well enough for people to take that risk. Also Netflix knows how hard it is to succeed so all their layoffs get a great severance.

Been there: the ratio of toxic teams to high performing teams is very high. Managers and senior engineers run the teams like little kingdoms. Have a bad 2 weeks? Get fired! Had a argument with the senior engineer? Get fired! The concept of “high performance” and “fully formed adults” and “stunning colleagues” translates in some teams to high sounding wind-bags, where self-marketing is turned into a fine art.

This isn’t a high performing company: lots of internal frameworks are overtly complicated and broken.

Keep in mind that managers are judged on their ability to write fluff pieces in medium and LinkedIn

There is some good - but a lot more bad

@wonderHoot I'd agree that some internal stuff is over complicated and broken (but some of it's awesome. ) Otherwise, it sounds like you worked at a different company than the Netflix I know. I'm not doubting you, but sorry that you had such a bad experience.

@Nquac32: its all good 🤗. I know that some parts of Netflix are really good: I just wish I had that figured out!

Most of the article is true. As someone said, it is brutal but efficient and lot of good people get caught in it too. And it's not for everyone and that's ok too

I’ve been at other fang companies, and have been very satisfied/happy at Netflix. Ymmv, but I don’t feel it is any different than any other companies out there.

It is very different from other companies. You are either in a very good spot at Netflix, or deluding yourself 🙂. The whole hoopla around 360, the keep test, etc. works against the morale of most individuals
