Anyone have any experience working in art for gaming companies? What does your career trajectory usually look like? What is the compensation like in that department?
I'm not in art but I know a little. The max level in art I saw is technical art director but those are very few. The realistic one is comparable to quality designer. Compensation is tough to answer. Compared to software engineers, it's lower but not bad.
Obviously depends on the company and location, but generally I think TC is a little behind what programmers make. You can still make a decent living though. I don’t know what a typical entry level art position salary is like today. When I started my first job about 15 years ago, I was only making 30k. I’m sure it’s better now. I have 15 years of experience now and make between 120k and 140k or so depending on how bonuses are. Typical career path is associate artist/animator - mid level - senior. Then possibly Lead, then maybe Art director for some.
Kinda sucks tbh ... if you like what you do, you have no choice. Many big companies will hire full time artist. These are good ones and bad ones always hire contract and it sucks when they don’t continue the contact. Definitely aim for full time position if you can. Pay will always be behind in comparison to SEs.
