Worth it to go from FB to Amazon?

Like the role and it’s virtual/ wfh. Pay is $50k more than current TC at FB. I think no perks at Amazon though.

50k not worth the stress, crappy wlb, and shitty vesting cycle.

You are also giving up all the great perks for free bananas

That vesting cycle is pure bullshit.

Do it only for 100k minimum

@Oracle, lol, the only way I would pick Amazon engineers in your hypothetical scenario is if all the Facebook and Google engineers were accused of killing puppies and kittens. And maybe even in spite of that.

Good luck with your "two pizza teams" startup that goes nowhere real soon.

Perhaps Netflix should employ the two pizza team concept so they could innovate beyond the concept they introduced like 10 years ago.

You got me, bro: please don't cut off our AWS.

Mudslinging apart, can you honestly tell me you'd pick Amazon engineers for that hypothetical situation? You wouldn't pick Google or Facebook engineers instead?

(Disclaimer: in the real world, I think hiring someone solely by their past employer is dumb, and I hope no one ever does that)

I think you should hire the best people for the job. As someone who graduated with return intern offers from both amazon and google, I don’t see much of a difference aside from the work you actually want to work on.

The comp differences were similar, but it turned out amazon had work that interested me more.

I went from Amazon to FB (so bias etc.), but I can attest that being an engineer at Amazon is just not worth it in the long run for most (modulo your team/manager setup as always). FB, you are treated as a first class citizen as an eng. Amazon, you are treated as a cog in the machine which is owned by business people (layers of mgmt, and PMs with MBAs, a model which they're currently doubling down on). I'm convinced the reason Amazon is able to retain eng talent is their outside reliance on foreign engineers who feel friction in the H1B, L1, or green card process (more than other big tech, I have data on this), and therefore don't leave. Also a very smart (read: slightly abusive) vesting schedule.

WFH is a dangerous long term play. Harder to grow your career and make an impact on a local team. Also usually first to get cut in layoffs or reorgs. But if that’s important to you then I say go for it as you’ll always find another tech job so I wouldn’t worry about risk too much.

Like them or not, Amazon has changed the face of shopping forever. They do really interesting things in media and electronics, and have made life easier for millions.

Facebook is an anti-American shithole that lives only to sell your data to whatever government or company will pay them. This has always been and always will be the case. They are ushering in the end of American democracy, and don’t mind doing it. Zuckerberg lied to Congress, and has nothing but his own interests at heart.

Fuck Facebook. It’s a cancer. Anyone who works there should think again.

Holy shit, I just went on an unexpected rant.

You are living in a bubble my friend . The only thing good amazon has done is made shopping easier by sucking the fun out of going to a market and shop like in the olden days.
When people are occupied with work they are less dangerous than when they don’t have shit to do. So yea, thanks for making us so free amazon

I don’t think I’m in a bubble. Amazon didn’t make going to a store less fun. How could they do that?

My point is that FB is a horrifically bad entity. Bad for the world, for individuals, and very specifically for America.
      Jun 12, 2018
    • Lending Club RealMaple
No. Facebook let’s people look at each other through a window. It doesn’t “connect” people at all. I think the tradeoff of “hey, my old college roommate had a baby” and “America is mortally wounded” isn’t much of a tradeoff.

And if you think FB made data “mistakes,” I disagree. They actively sold/gave data to governments and companies. Not an accident.

I think Facebook benefits are at least worth 20k in comparison to Amazon. Do you really want to change from FB to Amazon for 30k? Although the fact that it allows you to wfh ever day is pretty nice, you can live in a far cheaper place and your effective pay increase would be far greater than 30k.

I don't think it means being with a company for 30yrs. It means that there is a decent chance that your vested stock might be worth a lot if the company manages to stick around for so long.

In my 4th year at Facebook. Non technical IC 5. TC is $245, but will drop to $225k at the end of my 4th year. Amazon is in AWS. Also non technical but targeted at L 7, manager of team of 5. I’ve managed in other roles at Facebook and in my previous employer to Facebook. TC is $300. New manager based in Seattle but team I’d manage is distributed. I may get that TC with a promo to IC 6 at FB but that’s at least 1 yr away. Hate commuting.

Not likely from FB. Usually they downlevel from smaller companies. Like I was “principal” at my old firm, came in as senior at Amazon and I think that was accurate.

Might depend on your current role and what you’re going into here.

Just moved from amazon to FB. If you get L7 role that would be a big jump from L5 at FB. I would not even consider it for L6, they’ll keep you there for 2 yrs minimum.

If it is virtual/wfh for more pay, then it sounds like a good deal. This is because wfh will likely save you from playing politics at work. Just check to make sure that the role will still be around in 3 years. This might be an experimental toy project that could get canned anytime.

Amazon is team-dependent and there are lots of unpleasant teams. Also, WFH isn’t truly Amazon, you have to be there to get the full dose. It’s a PM-driven company in many corners, which has good and bad consequences. As others have asked, what’s the role, team, scope?

As a former Amazonian I can second opinion of others that tell you to think twice before joining Amazon. I wouldn't say I was badly treated on the opposite - all my managers were in the range from ok to very good. Still work env is quite toxic and you will sooner or later feel it if you join. It wasn't fun to work there and I am much happier since I left despite losing significantly in terms of RSUs.
