Would you fire an intern over the phone?

Ok, my spouse just started an internship at a start up a week ago. They were overburdening her with work and all the tasks. She kept putting in more hours, and not billing them. I could see it was more work than even I can perform in a day. She was doing decent and as the point of internship is so that intern can feel comfortable and learn and also deliver stuff. After a week , she gets a call from the person she was reporting to around 6 PM and he told it's not working out and all. They didn't even have enough courtesy to wait till tomorrow which was her working day ( Mon, wed and Thurs) to atleast tell her in the office. Would you do something like that to an intern?? Or would your company do that even if it's a start-up? Edit They gave the review , it's a language barrier. My spouse has bachelor's n master's in English from best university in India and also a diploma in Mass communication. Also a Cornell University HR certificate Edit 2: at the end of the call the guy actually asked my spouse to send her the content she had already created for her 2nd task.. that's fuckin shameful

That's unprofessional. Clearly a toxic workplace. She can now focus on getting a better job rather than clocking long hours.

Not many would burden an intern with that level of work. Sounds like they were trying to treat an intern like an employee, which is BS. They need to grow-up and get some class too. Be sure to blast them on Glassdoor, in a few months, so they won’t be able to pin anything on her.

Good riddance

Any company that fires intern ( with the exception of gross misconduct ),especially in a week, is not worth working for. Normally they do their due diligence to make sure that the person they are hiring is able to deliver.

Absolutely, they gave a task which included to write a blog of 1200 words for a product in 2 hours which we have never used..

A week sounds slim to determine if someone is not working out. Did they even give her any feedback? I’ll guess no. Overloading an unpaid intern and not setting reasonable expectations and providing guidance sounds like the place is probably full of inexperienced managers.

That’s tough. Language barrier is an interesting reason for someone who is an English speaker. Does she have an accent? Being judgmental, I’ve seen a fair number of startups not hiring people with accents, and I think it’s stupid. To be honest, this is probably a blessing. The next opportunity will be much better for her.

Sounds like she saved herself from wasting time in an internship that was a horrible fit. But I'm also highly suspicious when a spouse with more career seniority tries to interfere or second-guess what he perceives to be injustices in his spouse's career. Because things are usually more complicated than the story given.

I agree, but it was just a week in. Also, she wasn't even getting paid.. also it was a thing for learning and not for making money

A lot of my coworkers have spouses who also work at MSFT. I've personally seen husbands try to defend injustices in their wives career twice: Once, the wife was caught plagiarizing someone else's work during the first month on a team, and the husband straight up refused to believe she had done anything wrong. The other time, the wife was slacking off and not delivering work and convinced her husband that her manager was bullying her. But the manager was just trying to put her on a PIP following the steps from HR. In both cases, the husbands used a lot of political capital to attempt to correct the perceived injustices and defend their wives, and in the end both husbands looked like idiots. It's impossible to know exactly what happened. I'm just saying that usually extreme and/or retaliatory behavior doesn't come out of nowhere.

What’s this workplace?

One would assume they always knew about "language barrier" from the first meeting? This is not something that you "find out later"...
