Currently I’m in product and want to move to engineering. I was an engineer a decade ago and want to return. I haven’t had luck he has it an interview since I’m seen as a product manager now. Sears has several engineering roles and I can’t imagine people beating down their door. Do you think if I went there to get back in engineering I could get out? Or would that be career suicide?

Totally fine. If you’re a good engineer you will be a good one everywhere.
Also don’t believe anyone telling you that you won’t get any position in the “respectful” companies after Sears. That’s bullshit as well.

However, you should be quick to recognize if things are too slow in the company. If so, take a lead and move it faster. If it’s impossible — leave.

True advice, take lead when you can, but also unless the compensation is $$$$ don't go on a sinking ship.

Then again, if everyone leaves and you're the only one there ...

There's good engineers everywhere. I wouldn't ever hold Sears employment as a reason not to hire someone. These folks need to get off their high horses.

This, and seriously no offense, but I was going to use Yahoo as an example. There is still ridiculous talent in Yahoo (Oath) research and engineering groups that FANG and their betters are trying/still failing to woo.
