Nope. It’s funny how media likely to blast Uber for extravagant holiday parties so they have to make it so low key now. 2 employees per room in Vegas last time was no where near extravagant. My previous company which is a smaller 300+ people startup check employees into 5 star hotel suite per person and booked whole Michelin star restaurants for holiday party.
Unless you really can’t support the cause for whatever serious reason, you should do it. Not just for the volunteering but just for your image within the team and with the company. Ducking out of events like this by pulling an obviously fake sick day is just bad for morale. These things have a tendency to come back and bite you later.
Just some friendly advice from someone who has seen somebody else get completely shut out by doing stuff like that.
