Recently found out that Yelp pays quite well. 1. Interested in knowing what are the levels at Yelp. Similar to Google/fb (E3-E9)? 2. What is the target bonus % for each level? 3. Target refresher %? 4. What's the pay bump on promotions? 5. How fast/easy are promos on Microsoft to Google scale? TC 200k
Yeah, they intentionally structure their company to run on fresh grads from B tier schools. They pay so-so, but they'll make you a management by the time you stay three years. Very very sclerotic. They were still running Python 2.6 a couple of years ago when I was there, and they had no plan on how to get off it.
Sigh! This seems like really elitist person who seems to classify people based on the school they went to. As if someone from non tier 1 school can’t be a good engineer. We have many hires from Berkeley, MIT, CMU, Waterloo not sure how are they B tier. Salary is a different matter though, may be not at par with FB or Netflix but it is still good. Ownership can be huge here due to small size of teams. You can be at Google or FB and work on something obscure.
TIL Berkeley B tier school
Regarding levels/promos, up until very recently there were none, so nobody really knows the answers to those questions. But in general they pay competitively, but just barely so. A super high salary shouldn't be your main motivator if you want to work here
What about annual bonus and refreshers, if any? How much do SWEs usually get?
They don’t have annual bonus. One of the very few public company who doesn’t have bonus.
No annual bonus, but pretty much everyone does get a yearly stock refresher depending on performance. From what I've seen it ranges from 75k-125k
Sounds like the comp is lower than G? G has cash bonus but aren’t the refreshers in that range?
Yeah based on the numbers I've seen it's lower than fb, G, Netflix etc. Comparable to Amazon and Microsoft though. Maybe higher than Microsoft.
YOE?
The margins on Yelp's business model are super thin because the typical ad sale for them is <$500 - they have thousands of sales people compared to hundreds of engineers. (Speaking of which, do they serve lunch yet? Let alone breakfast or dinner?) One of the things I hated about working there was that they would say in company meetings, "We made a profit this quarter! We have millions more in the bank!" And then I'd open Google news and it would say Yelp lost money under GAAP rules (the rules regulators and wall street uses), because in those company meetings they weren't including stock grants in comp. Made me crazy working there.
