Pretty much need to do this. We’re paying for illegals who just show up at the ER. Mandate them into the health insurance pool so they’re paying their fair share to lower the cost for everyone else.

And about time the state starts regulating drug prices. Why hasn’t Trump done anything about after b*tching about it on Twitter? He’s never once asked for congress to fix fix this.

If illegals don't even file tax returns, how can the government mandate them?

Roughly 1/2 of them do. But they do it to claim child tax deductions to get money back since most of the time their income is too low for federal taxes. This way we can catch them.

      #honeypot.

Worst case scenario is nothing changes and they still go to the ER and don’t pay. At least now some of them will pay.

There’s no downsides and only upsides to this.

Summoning executives for a PR stunt isn’t the same thing as asking congress to change the law to allow the federal government to negotiate down the costs of drugs. They can do in the VA. Costco can do it. Walmart can do it. But Medicare is explicitly not allowed to do it.

Trump is all talk and no action on this and the markets know it.

    • Do you think Nancy “NoCompromise” Pelosi will want to hear any of this?

It’s easier to negotiate with Kim Jong Un than NP.

It has to start from somewhere. Dems aren’t going to do it on their own.

The Dems are doing something about it in CA. That’s the point of this thread. But plenty of blue dogs are bought off by big pharma along with the pretty much the entire GOP.

  • Though I am Republican leaning but its time we have single payer system. We need to get rid of system where people can go bankrupt because of health issues. Enough!
    Jan 82
    • Yeah! I agree! More taxes!

You don't know what being a republican means apparently. It's certainly not to expand government dramatically (the cost is 2x the California budget just for California...)

You can prevent medical bankruptcies without single payer... Wtf

I wonder as an American citizen, if I get sick in Mexico, will I be covered by their socialized health care? Seriously asking

I’m not aware of any country that will turn away people from an ER.

The Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago all provide some level of universal health coverage

Yes, you can’t be covered if you get sick and travel to the UK, Canada or Mexico... but if you get sick while traveling or have an accident, you will be treated. Each country might be slightly different in how they handle it.

You will not be covered by THEIR system, but your US insurance should include travel provisions, and if not you should buy travel insurance.

As other said they won't turn you away but they will bill you. The bill will be a lot less than in the US though.

Oh interesting, that makes sense. What happens if you’re there illegally? I would imagine it depends on the country.

You will not be turned away and will be billed if you are visiting or undocumented... at least in UK and Mexico. But the costs are much lower... even comparatively. Uninsured in Mexico is like $30 for a hospital visit, house-call or ambulance ride. In the US some insured people pay $20-30 for a hospital visit, and uninsured ambulance ride is hundreds if not thousands of dollars, house calls probably only exist for super-rich people.

So the idea that Mexicans would come to the US (healthcare quality is roughly the same in these countries) “illegally” to “get handouts” is just absurd.

A few years back, but when I went to an Austrian hospital on travel, I had to pay $100 cash to the ambulance on the spot and also got a hospital bill even though they have “single-payer.”

I’m excited for California to experiment with / pay for most of these topics.

    More conservative pro-insurance healthcare 👎

We need to kick out these centrists and push for single-payer universal healthcare.

Agreed, then you can take all the sick folks from the other 49 states.
