So do they specify what they are? I’m chatting with a guy there on Thursday, hoping he says they work like a startup and have a really high bar.

We are actually a technology company that happens to be in the telecom business - T-Mobile

Huh. I can actually buy that. That’s not total bullshit, and it’s better than thinking small. Of course maybe they should think bigger, and frame it as being in the business of connecting people.

It’s BS because it does not match actions. That’s the fundamental definition of BS.

Yes, that is the functional definition. Fair enough.

These layoffs were the last resort and are absolutely necessary for our future, long-term success.

Haha that one’s repeated so often and so mindlessly it’d be alarming not to hear it.

I’ll give Oracle some credit here because I legit see people trying to do that now and then. But otherwise yeah.

It makes sense when it is honest and not lip service. 😁

Oracle isn't the only place I've heard this.

Oh! How could I overlook that. And the more interchangeable they treat the two distinctly different terms, the better.

Curiously enough the only one I hear around Oracle is about working like a startup.

I think it's because Oracle lost its dreamers and visionaries a loooong time ago. Engineers putting themselves out to pasture, and to their credit, are self-aware, have no need for corporate bullshit.

There are plenty of people dreaming about doing bold, visionary stuff at Oracle. The company has a rich history of showcasing imaginative vaporware. Much of it looks awesome, too. The problem is that many people there aren’t interested in the gritty details of making it happen.

Sometimes I’m tempted to loop with every company that contacts me just to see if at least 2 people will say something about how they “work like a startup.” I say “2 people” because it’s a given that at least 1 person will for sure say that. Even Oracle had 2 people who said that.
