You're being recruited and flown out by an executive before discussing comp - what do you do?

I'm transitioning out of GE and have had lots of calls lately, with a few progressing. Out of the blue, an EVP calls me and wants me for a leadership role that I haven't applied for. We talk for ten minutes and then his EA schedules my flight and car service (with permission). I'm joining him and his executive team in another state during their leadership meetings. Four interviews on day one, three on day two. All with heads of various functions at the company (well-funded, ~$400m annual revenue). I've had one somewhat similar situation, but I'm curious how you would handle comp, negotiation, etc. It is clear that I'm their top choice, hence the recruitment, but how would you handle the situation? - Don't throw out any number first? - State salary expectations (current comp plus x%) - Discuss current comp - Something else What would you do?

Wait until recruiter gives you a number then negotiate from there.

GE cannonball OP Jan 22, 2018

No recruiter is involved. All communication has been with the EVP and his EA.

Wait until your offer. Throwing numbers puts you at a disadvantage. What if they were going to give you more and you just shot yourself in the foot by saying you want x?

If you're asking these questions on Blind, you probably aren't qualified for such a position and id think about that carefully.

GE cannonball OP Jan 22, 2018

Thanks! I know how I'm playing it, but I'm curious what others think. I'd stay off Blind at Snap so your CEO doesn't try to get you jailtime. ;)

You will find that insulting Snap doesn't bother most Snap employees lol. Love it! 😂

Comp alone should not be deciding , if you like the role and the people and the challenge/ room for growth define whats fair given the location Industry etc. If asked make them throw a number first assess wrt to the fair number you have picked and negotiate respectfully. Sound very exciting though.

GE cannonball OP Jan 22, 2018

Agreed. The role would be perfect. The company is not near as well known as other "more desirable to the masses" companies. Other recruitments always led with the package.

Salesforce ProdSch Jan 22, 2018

Good in that case forget the brand and let the process get to the number. If this is a situation where the executive and you are in a informal setting and he casually makes the ask, might have to think on your feet and keep very disciplined yo keep pushing back the first offer on the exec. Focus on the value you bring them via campaigns new customers brand value increase and other things to put in perspective and with those large numbers said may be discussing tour comp may not sound as large😀

Don't state your current compensation. Make them go first.

GE cannonball OP Jan 22, 2018

I know that is always the most sage advice. Marketing is strange though. I know directors making $50k and I know directors making $300k.

Tesla eng56 Jan 22, 2018

Then provide them with a large range and not a single number. You will have a higher chance of getting it closer to what they expected

*** For reference *** I'm 99% sure what I'm going to do. I do this shit all the time, and for this particular role, I'm actually on all the top 20 _____ lists. It is essentially the face of the brand and trying to follow a playbook that I've built and executed before in the exact same industry. I'm curious about what YOU would do to see where consensus stands with lots of great companies and diverse areas of expertise. No trolling, or shaming, or stupidity. I'm curious. I appreciate all the serious comments because recruitments are as much personality match as skills. Thanks all (even the trolling / insulting) comments. 👍

You sound like you're trying to jerk your ego off if I'm being honest here.

Apple hans32 Jan 22, 2018

Why don't you share YOUR playbook first?

Google bPBa22 Jan 22, 2018

If asked about ‘what do you think is a fair number’ say you ‘consider the whole package not just the bottom line como, as benefits, healthcare, etc are all very important’.

Most probably internal candidates are dinged on comp...but as others said overall role counts more. Nevertheless two things 1. Definitely find comp from other folks for a similar role in a company like yours 2. Get in touch with some executive recruiters for a similar role at other companies...

Is this a VP role at VC-funded private company? If so, there is a lot of data out there — there’s a survey called VCECS that 50+ venture funds send to their CEOs. Just use that to gauge your likely market comp.

I’d go on that free vacation and see what happens!
