How would they “fuck him up”
From his actual speech: This raises a larger question about the future of the global internet. China is building its own internet focused on very different values, and is now exporting their vision of the internet to other countries. Until recently, the internet in almost every country outside China has been defined by American platforms with strong free expression values. There’s no guarantee these values will win out. .... While our services, like WhatsApp, are used by protesters and activists everywhere due to strong encryption and privacy protections, on TikTok, the Chinese app growing quickly around the world, mentions of these protests are censored, even in the US. Is that the internet we want? It’s one of the reasons we don’t operate Facebook, Instagram or our other services in China. I wanted our services in China because I believe in connecting the whole world and I thought we might help create a more open society.
An "open" society is also one where the loudest group that is best at information manipulation controls the narrative. Within the US there seem to exist two paradoxial universes one described by CNN and one described by Fox, and both sides have fervent supporters who firmly believe the other side is fake news. This is partly the result of your platform, Mr Facebook, which is arguably one of the largest purveyors of bullshit on earth. This exactly mirrors the 2016 election held by a country more divided and deluded than ever, with outright lies and sensationalism spewed by both sides, where the victor is not to be determined by the soundness of proposed policies but by whoever manages to win the mudslinging contest. And we're about to do it all over again next year. Is it hard to believe that some societies decide to go a different route? Who are we to ride this moral high horse and judge?
That is a twisted view for democracy. As someone from a country where we had gone from dictatorship to democracy, I know how the government brain washes people into believing censorship is good etc. There are so many people who are gone missing or died or jailed by the government along the way. Not all of them were gone because of their speech against the government. Just because you were simply in the know or in the way of their doing something, you are easily eliminated. The current civilization was not built under the dictatorship. China has done well so far economically but it doesn’t mean it can make the country reach the level of freedom and cultural development to the current developed countries. No one watches Chinese drams and movies or listen to their songs for a reason. I am worried that young elite Chinese are brain washed into thinking the current government is even better solution than US. Yet, they are still living in US. Democracy can look ugly sometimes but almost anyone who experienced democracy will prefer being in that way to becoming a dictator country like China and North Korea.
I have no trust in the Chinese government at all.
Typically this big company tries tor refrain themselves from politics. E.g. GS and other top banks fired some employees participating in the protest (protest in workday and go against the law). FB is blaming China actively to show patriotism and gains more leverage in the US.
He’s too much of a robot to achieve his desired wanna-be politician status with antagonistic rhetoric. He doesn’t innately understand the fine lines and how to walk them.
Lol - nothing as roiling - if you get paid , and paid well , you will bear abuse , that’s how most software engineers are - they only care about TC
Very funny post to read
Good for him. Dude's got more spine than Cook on this issue.
Dont assume. it leads to McCarthyism.
This kind of replies convinces me more in what Andrew Yang said, “Chinese Americans are just one generation away from camps”. We don’t know if it’s going to happen, but the trend is going there. There’s nothing wrong to be born in China.
