I am a 34yo and live in SF and my rent is $2200 for 700sq/ft apt on polk street (rent control for 10 years). $265 TC. I have about 750K in vested apple stock and can probably swing a $1.1M 2 bedroom condo on the peninsula (san mateo/redwood city). The commute is dragging me in the dirt and so is the poop on the street, no dishwasher and no laundry in my place. I want to live comfortably and i'm just tired of the city life after 10 years. Still single, and seeing multiple girls and aware that the girls scene is going to be tougher on peninsula.

Why is "wifey with good TC" the top vote?
Find a wifey and buy together, sure. But why is the TC important here given you're already well off?
Find someone that makes you happy.

Don’t buy in this market. You have a rent controlled place in a highly desired area. Wait until a recession and buy then. You’ll make six figures on that investment once the economy turns around based on the assumption that the economy follows its normal lifecycle.

Because when recession hits, his Apple stock will still be worth 750k 😂

Find a girl that you like. Suddenly you'll realize that 1) the rat race isn't quite so important and you should lower your standards for how much money you think you need and 2) you already have a bunch of money, so pat yourself on the back and realize that you can drop it a gear and just cruise if you'd like

Poop on the street, no dishwasher, no laundry sounds pretty crappy. What’s the point of earning that much if you can’t live well? Move to the burbs, you will get enough women even if if it’s not like the city

i see your point for sure, but i mean i can basically live like a rapper, fly to exotic places with my 21 days of vacation a year, have a cleaning lady do my laundry every two weeks. what do i need a dishwasher for if i can just eat out at nice restaurants whenever i want?

Congrats! 1) diversify your stock. 2) Keep the SF apartment and rent a room in peninsula for a month on Craigslist and see how you like living there. Try different neighborhoods. Or maybe you negotiate to only sleep there on weekdays. You might find you just needed a quick break.

Keep the stock and rent closer to work. SF is just not worth it, if you plan to have kids then you have to do the lottery thing which means you have little control over what school your kids will go to.

Why would he keep it? Apple is downhill from here unless they create a new product

I guess he could diversify, but I’m not so sure about the downhill path. At least that what people said before the iPod came

Personally I would never leave SF to move to the boring peninsula. Sure, there’s less human feces on the sidewalk, but it’s lame suburbia.
