Google lowballs a lot of people nowadays. But the interesting thing is that it’s a bit scary how close the opening offer is usually compared to your tc. For example, I was making 180k and was offered 190k. Another friend of mine was making 230k and was offered 240k. It seems as if based on our background and previous firm they can somehow get that lowest offer that we might still be willing to accept. Note that this applies to the lowball opening offer and not the final offer after competing numbers. is this just a coincidence or am I looking too much into this?
Yes and yes
the recruitors are professionals on offers, they know the lowest number that u are willing to accept
Run run skynet
Google knows everything.
Industry avg. Cant do background check for your tax return until you consent
Do they eventually ask for consent to see your w2 or paystub ?
This is why they want you to fill out an application for an onsite. That authorizes them to look into your finances/credit history so they can lowball you or not hire you.
There are market research firms who specialize in this type of data. All large companies pay for the detailed reports.
They can EASILY find your salary to the penny even if you don't give consent to contact your company. They access it in the background check with "The Work Number." Google it. You can sign up with your SSN today and you can see what they see. ALL of your historical paychecks are there going back decades, up to the last one, as well as every job title you've held. It's extremely accurate! You can BLOCK anyone from gaining access to your report by writing to The Work Number. It's your right and you should do it!!
I think they can find out of you work for bigger companies. My loan agent told me my exact salary, they got it from their employment checks.
They probably do have average market data about companies but not your personal comp. And yes the whole aim of their offer is to give you the lowest possible offer that you'll accept.
Yea but it’s beyond just average market data. Even say two people with the same yoe and level at a company can have different tcs due to refreshers etc, and yet Google seems to be on point every time
Being on point is a coincidence.
