You should assume that anything you type, click, or think on your work computer can be viewed, because it probably can be. Will it? Unlikely if you don't really fuck up. But still? Why risk it. Just text them

They have access to it but I remember reading in our privacy docs that if a manager/superior wants access to the IMs, they need to notify the employee that their chat is being accessed. So yes, but not that straight forward.
