Don't. If you're any good at it, join a buy side to put real dollars behind your ideas

That. Be a portfolio manager or trader or don’t do it. If you don’t have the stomach for risk, do something else with your analytical skills. Active fund management is a small, consolidating, and difficult industry. Unless you are passionate about trading your own book based on owning your own analysis, I think it would be a really bad life decision. (I spent the better part of a decade in sales and trading and know what I’m talking about.)

The same skills and interests are applicable in PE and some pockets of VC, as well as consulting. All of those are better options than public equity research.
