interviewing

have given about 4 to 5 interviews I am trying to understand how hiring works to help me make a job change - recruiter stages/profile matching :- numerous times matching of job to profile doesn't work great . I have said this . Very few recruiters stop the process. Most of them say " Yeah the job description is not great , but I know you will be a great fit. ". Gave phone interview then reply "you did great in coding but your background doesn't match so will put your resume for x months down the road. " and truly so totally different field . I am like I said so . A FANG recruiter spent 1 week doing profile matching for open job listing sending me ID's and after phone interview said sorry we hire generalist not for a domain when asked why was there no domain discussion . In few cases I got to the onsite after all this and the hiring managers / interviewer are like your profile doesn't match . Is domain that irrelevant ? - phone interview , leetcode style :- In one hour after 20 mins of background discussion , booooom unrelated to domain leetcode question . I solve it. ( get to onsite ) But for most of the questions its impossible to solve in 35 mins time unless seen before . What are they trying to judge here? . They even say choose your language after posting the question, do people taken into account that coding in C might be different than c++ different than python . - onsite :- Usual coding leetcode style questions . Interviewer blatantly saying I haven't seen your resume , busy day . Some repeatedly asking question in-spite you telling you don't know . Like language specific - java etc System design - this is the most confusing to me . The system design questions are specific to work the interviewer is doing . I have not seen them ask general question . Like how will you design a web service . Have you seen in my resume design one? I can come with something but it's not going to match with someone who has worked in that field. - Referral :- Most of the people are able to move easily without struggle are the ones referred. That would mean that a company doesn't believe in its own interviewing process and prefers a referred candidate . Why even interview others then? Sorry for long post :( didn't realize it will be this long.

How did you get hired at Magic Leap? Was the process totally domain specific?

both coding and domain specific

Keep it up bro. Being a leaper gives us quite some advantage - people are somewhat interested in our work and product. During the interviews, tell the interviewer the cool aspects of our product can really make the conversation interesting. I think this makes us stand out from the a lot of the candidates.

Magic Leap NtHere OP Jul 31, 2019

:) Yes I do talk about what we are doing and product . Rarely people are interested , since I don't get any follow up questions. I wouldn't say its magic leap specific , even when I tell about previous work people don't seem interested. Its more like they have a pre -filled sheet and trying to mark check box . Rest just filtered

I guess it depends on how you present it. Start from “you can play Angry Birds on your dinning room table”, and slowly introduce your work from there. Not sure about what the others think, but in my opinion, as an interviewer, I will most likely think this project is interesting, or at least very different.

Your writing is borderline unintelligible. I would start with addressing that.

Magic Leap NtHere OP Jul 31, 2019

Okay . I can improve on that . It was my first post here :) . How does writing matter in person interviews . I have enough feedback that in person conversation isn't an issue .

I assume you’re emailing written correspondence. It all leaves an impression. That’s my only point.

Why the hell would you care so much about writing, it is the knowledge that matters. Writing can always be refined. @magicleap I feel you bro. To get an offer it does not matter if you are working on any interesting stuff or have really designed any distributed Systems, just read the stuff from grokking system design and repeat it back in the interview, practice all the problems in leetcode and repeat in the interview and you are selected. This has become like an entrance test. The interview system now a days doesn’t really judge if you are better Engineer it is judging if you are able to work like a Robot by read all the problems and repeat that’s it.

What good is your “knowledge” if you still come across as an idiot. Maybe you think you have the system gamed. I can see through it. Good luck.

Thanks @Ikqf10

If you place the periods and question marks without space, that would be much more readable.
