My job title is: Member of Technical Staff. Nobody I speak with from other tech companies have heard of my title, is it just an old legacy title?

It’s a title born from Bell Labs. so being that you’re from ATT, it makes sense. The title is generally more research/development/architecture type roles rather than straight engineering roles.

No many companies use the title. First one that comes to mind is VMWare

I would put the MTS title in the resume. That is equivalent to a Director level or a Sr. Manager position, at least in TMobile. Experienced HRs would catch that.

Really? Then Verizon has more directors than other companies combined.

I am talking about levels. Its quite a senior position. Atleast here they dont shell out that position easily. You will find only 2-3 people under a VP

Yep, its an Individual Contributor on the Director level, so higher than Principal Engineer here

In my area MtS can be entry level on to manager level. To be director level you need to be a PMTS or DMTS

Does it really matter what your title within the company is? Most people just make up whatever job title they want for their resume any way

ROFL whenever I read "Member of Technical Staff", my mind conjures up images of domestic help for a large European castle. You are so generic and unimportant, they didn't even invest time in thinking up a relevant title.

Hah, Verizon uses/used it pretty extensively. Maybe it's an old MaBell construct?

In the end I think the OP is looking for a translation to a more general industry term.
I would say give the title and subtitle it with your job level followed by Software/System Engineer/Developer etc

Yes it's an old legacy title. Just change your job title to something more "industry standard" on your resume and Linkedin. It's not a big deal.

At T-Mo they have MTS which is like a principal with a higher pay band and more respected title. There are a decent number of these in the company, and some directors have 3-4 reporting to them. There are quite a few already, and more being made.

There is also Sr MTS which is director level. This is fairly tightly controlled position and there are fewer than 20 in the company. 1-2 per VP would usually be the most you'd see, but there are exceptions to this.

MTS position arose out of network engineering org originally, but now they are scattered across different orgs and functions in technical roles.

    Both positions are well respected.

Yes, it used to mean something as Cisco. A title that was earned and respected from your peers. Now it’s a diluted title which means I am getting a bigger bonus than most and my resume was full of the right buzz words.
